As 2024 became the year of Brazilian music in Samples

How Brazilian samples flood world productions and contribute to the pop is still fertile ground

Sample, an English word for “sample” in the universe of music, is a clipping made from an original recording that joins a new recording. When we produce a song we can use the sample, choosing the excerpt from the song, cutting it and inserting it into the new recording as a quote, as an instrumental basis or even part of a song. I like to use the track “Mara”, LUEDJI LUNAproduced by her, Kato Change and for this one who writes you. At the end of the song it is possible to hear the voice of Milton Nascimento. Milton It was not present in the current recording, there is a sample, a clipping extracted from the song “Party Kiss”, Toninho Hortarecorded by the singer on the album Mines (1972).

The sample always carries a story of its own: it is like a musical photography, with its scenario, lighting, art direction, costumes and private characters. The mere quotation of a sample, as I did above, calls us to think about who the interpreters, composers, artists, musicians, sound engineers, producers and every ecosystem of a recording are. For the ears, curious as mine and attentive, the sample is always an invitation to dive deep into the music.

2024 was considered the year of Brazilian samples in international productions, but the truth is that since the producers started digging Brazilian albums, they have not stopped.

Only the version of “Ipanema Girl”, ASTRUD GILBERTO with Stan Getzfrom 1964, has already saved to Bad Bunnylargest Latin artist of Spotify (in numbers), in 2020, with the song “Si veo to you breast”; SZA in “BMF”In 2024 and 12 other tracks released from the 1990s to this day.

But not only old classics they feed, and a funk sample “Damn heating”, Mandrake. DJ Charopinhohelped Beyoncé to conquer the unpublished Grammy of Best album of the year with Cowboy Carter (2024). The track appears sampled in “Spaghetti”In addition to Queen B, other artists also excavated samples in the production of national funk.

In the duo’s debut album Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign, Voltures2024, we found a sample of funk “Makes 3.0”In the track“Paperwork“. In this same album collaborate as producers Vitinho BDPproducer of the original track, as well as Jpegmafamous NY DJ who was also enchanted by funk and in the track “ITS ‘Dark and Hell is Hot”, Sample“UPA UPA POCOTÓ X 170BPM”, DJ Ramemes.

Another track that does not leave the MPCs (instrument used for samplear) is “WaveCassian. Last year, 2024, the French Folie’s Used it in “bad!”. But NXWORRIES I had already sampled it in 2015 in “Link Up”Feat. Anderson .PAak and in 1977, the trumpeter Fred Hubbardnot well sampled, but rewrented the same original guitar lines as the “From Now On” track Cassianin 1976. I believe that, besides the voice of Cassianwhat draws attention in this Brazilian soul classic is also the bass line of PAULO CÉSAR BARROSwhich gives all the balance, next to the battery. Cassian also appears at the release of 2024, J. ColeA Plate of Collard Greens”In the sample of the track“Candlestick”From your album We present our cassiano1973.

Also with strong production in the 1970s, Ivan Lins is a very dear artist outside even before the episode in which he refused the proposal of Quincy Jones to give in the song “New time”For the best -selling album in history, Thrillerfrom Michael Jackson. In 2024, Common and Pete rock launched “FortuneAnd, in it, we hear the sample of “Eye”, 1978, Ivan Lins. Opening this portal and listening to the original, we find in the same track a beautiful solo of harmonica MAURÍCIO EINHORN. Another Brazilian sample, also present on the album The Auditoriumfrom Rock and Commonbut sung in English, appears in the track “Everything’s so grand”With the voice of Maria Bethâniainterpreting the song “What’s New”, On your record Your presence1971.

In addition to Ivananother very dear is Luiz Bonfá, sampled more than one hundred times in several works, from the nineties to this day. The sample of your instrumental music “Seville”Used by Gotye in “Somebody that i used to know”It yielded the first place in the top of the charts of more than 30 countries and the Grammy of Year of the yearin 2013. The same track was also sampled by another winner of the Grammy, Dochiiin the track “Anxiet2025 year old and has earned him the top 10 of more than sixty stops.

The list extends between artists of various musical genres and countries, not restricted to the United States only. Our phonographic production, via sample, is on all continents of the planet and is a representation of the power that has always been our music.

The world has long been looking and valuing the production of here, the story here, our classics that founded and paved the way for Brazilian music that wins the world. Whether it’s MPB, samba, soul, funk 150bpm, mandel or drum, our creativity is perhaps what arouses so much interest in those looking out for our music.

It is important that this look from the outside in that, not only is valued, but also works as a seal for what is “good music”, also effective from within, among us and that national artists will be valued by their legacies, still in life.

The black music of Brazil and the world would not be the same without the existence of Cassianso celebrated in the samples. However, the artist left us in 2021, without appearing at any festival, without surfing the hype of the spraying of his music via Samples, had been forgotten for a whole decade, practically in the 1990s and died in a public hospital in the suburb of Rio de Janeiro.

May other artists celebrated by the Sample Culture have their importance recognized in life and that in fact this culture will serve more than a musical support, may be a portal to visit in depth and revere the work of those who paved the path we can follow today freely.
