Florence Welch on miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy: ‘The closest to death’

‘I felt like I was crossing a door, and was full of women screaming’, she reveals in a new interview with The Guardian

Florence Welch He opened upon experienced miscarriage and an ectopic pregnancy in 2023.

In a new interview with The Guardianthe vocalist of Florence and the machine He said that in August 2023 he discovered, days after suffering a miscarriage, that pregnancy was ectopic. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg is implanted in the fallopian tube instead of the womb.

The fallopian tube broke, causing internal bleeding. “The closest I came from generating life was the closest I came from death,” she told the publication. “And I felt like a door, and was full of women shouting.”

Welch He said that two years ago, she and her boyfriend decided to try to have a baby. “It was my first experience trying to get pregnant, and I thought, ‘No way, because I’m an elder,'” he recalled I thought at the time; It was about to turn 37. However, it became pregnant in the first attempt. “It was a big shock. But it also seemed magical. I felt that it had followed a body instinct in that animal sense, and it happened.”

The miscarriage happened at the beginning of pregnancy, so they had not yet shared the news with anyone. “I think because it was my first pregnancy and my first miscarriage, I thought, ‘Okay, I heard that this is part.’ I talked to my doctor, and are usually not dangerous. Devastating but not dangerous,” he said.

Just a week later, she says she was climbing to be headliner for a festival in Cornwall, England. Decided to continue with the show. “Emotionally, I was sad and scared, but I think I was also dealing with the situation,” he said.

It was not the first time she had been going on to make a presentation. The previous year, Welch He broke his foot as he danced on stage and continued to present herself bleeding. “With physical issues, I have a strange, supernatural force,” he told the vehicle. “Emotionally, I’m an absolute nightmare. Literally, collapse,” he said. “But broken bone? Quiet. Internal hemorrhage? Let’s go ahead.”

In the case of the day of her presentation in Cornwall, after the ectopic pregnancy of which she was not yet aware, she said she was feeling incredible pain and bleeding intensely. Although ectopic pregnancies are rare, occurring in about two percent of all pregnancies, according to Cleveland Clinic, her doctor advised her to take an exam, and she planned to do an ultrasound when she returned home in London. “Women! It’s funny. I took an ibuprofen and took the stage,” he said. She says she had an amazing show, but on the tour bus back to London, the pain came back.

“Do you know what is the most screwed part?” He added. “I didn’t want to do the ultrasound. I thought, ‘I did this show, I’m fine, I can handle.’ But my doctor’s insistence so I could save my life.”

During the exam, her doctor paused, which made her “panic,” he said. Her fallopian tube had broken and she “was equivalent to a can of blood coca-cola in the abdomen.” He had emergency surgery, but his fallopian tube had to be removed. She should travel to another festival, but said, “If I had taken that plane, I would have come down to a stretcher. Or worse.”

The next sixth album of Florence + The Machine, Everybody Screamarrives on October 31st. Before the LP, the band shared the title track and the music “One of the Greats”.
