For the past decade or so, The CW has been strongly associated with gender-centric programming aimed at young people, from the older ones Supernatural (and your neighbor spin-off that expands the myth the Winchesters ) towards something vampire diary franchise to DC Comics’ Arrowverse heroes. But that era is about to end soon. While things have yet to be finalized, The CW has been taken over by new owners Nexstar Media Group, which will hold a 75% financial stake, with Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global holding 12.5% each. And from just the few details that have been released so far, it’s clear that the Arrowverse could never have survived the changes coming to The CW.
Nextstar’s goal is to make a profit with The CW by 2025
First, Nexstar’s overall plan with the latest streaming network is to make it a plan that can actually make money, rather than operating at a loss year after year. The company’s chief financial officer, Lee Ann Gliha, shared this rather shocking fact during a conference call with analysts (via Term):
It’s no secret that CW isn’t profitable, but it’s not typical of fully distributed broadcast or cable networks. In fact, according to data from SNL Kagan, no other streaming network operates at a continuous loss.
A rather important and obvious reason for such financial imbalances? The fact that the network was investing as much money in programs as the flash, legends of tomorrow, super girl and more, without the respective audiences of these programs necessarily justifying financial support. Which is not to say that the Arrowverse has the most expensive superhero shows on TV or whatever, but they are certainly very expensive by broadcast standards and with seasons extending far beyond comparable streaming rates.
Nextstar president and COO Tom Carter said The CW is losing “nearly twice as much” as its TV rivals, which isn’t a plan the big boss intends to take. It is not clear if this means the flashThe next swan song will be AF Chinch, or if that budget has already been locked in early. Considering Grant Gustin said they could have ended on their terms one can only hope that this means that there will be some financial leeway.
Fast forward to 2023, the only correct entry in The CW’s Arrowverse the flash it will end with a truncated last season while his super-series colleagues superman and laws is technically safe with its third season coming up . Currently, it has been confirmed that The CW will continue to work with Paramount and WBD on scripted original content until 2022 and 2023, but will review their options once the current partnership agreement expires.
The CW will focus on your actual demographic age rather than what you want to be
For a network full of 20-year-old superheroes and high school students All Americans, Riverdale and more, The CW is somehow not very popular with young viewers. In fact, Tom Carter revealed that according to his research, the average CW viewer is 58, which is more like the crowd that tunes in to Paramount’s CBS every night. This, in a nutshell, is why Carter thinks The CW is so low compared to the Big 4.
Therefore, while steps will no doubt be taken to somehow reduce this average number, Nexstar executives plan to introduce more programs suited to this age group. To that end, The CW will see an increase in cheaper unscripted series, presumably on par with Whose line is this anyway? Yes Penn & Teller: deceive usalthough perhaps more along the lines of talent-based shows like AGcompetitive projects such as Older brotheror series related to romance such as The single person. The cheapest one I guess.
On top of that, the network will also introduce more syndicated programming to complement its training, which will certainly keep costs down. It’s unclear exactly which programs will include reruns, but there are certainly plenty of options to choose from, although Arrowverse reruns likely aren’t involved.
So while the fans will no doubt continue to hope for a miracle on the left field to save legends of tomorrowThere’s no inherently logical way for this to happen on The CW, and any future Arrowverse projects should definitely happen on HBO Max right now. Or maybe somewhere you don’t have to deal with too projects archived and deleted at an alarming rate . I guess the bright side here is that last year we changed to get used to all the cancellations, rather that everything survived long enough for Nexstar to take it out in one fell swoop.
