After acquiring ‘Saw’, Blumhouse wants the rights to ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ and ‘Friday the 13th’

Producer Jason Blum confirms interest in reviving A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th after acquiring Saw, even after losing the dispute over The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

After winning part of the franchise rights Sawthe Blumhouse is already targeting new targets in the territory of terror. The studio of Jason Blumknown for revitalizing sagas like Halloween and The Exorcistnow dreams of bringing back two of the biggest icons of the genre: Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street.

In an interview with Variety, Jason Blum stated that the two franchises are his “white whales”, a reference to almost unattainable creative desires.”Those are my two white whales. We are always haggling. I look for them every day. I will never give up the search. And if they make one without me, I’ll look for the next movie”, declared the producer, reinforcing his determination to take control of these legendary horror brands.

The ambition comes on the heels of a recent defeat: Blumhouse lost the auction for the rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The dispute was won by A24, which is now developing a new version of the 1974 classic with the producer Roy Lee (The Evil Hour) and the actor Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) at the head of the project.

Despite the setback, the producer guarantees that his interest in iconic franchises has not diminished. Known for transforming tired properties into modern hits — like Halloween (2018) —, Blum claims to like “take IPs that people view with skepticism and turn expectations upside down”.
