How Limp Bizkit ended up on the ‘Battlefield 6’ soundtrack

The rap rock band’s lead singer, Fred Durst, talks about his contributions to the popular military shooter alongside the game’s composer, Henry Jackman

To absolutely no one’s surprise, Battlefield 6 was a huge success — with fans across all platforms flocking to the game’s multiplayer mode with one purpose: to break everything. With a peak of more than 747 thousand simultaneous players in the Steam on its launch day, on October 10, the game has been dominating the charts in its debut week.

In its review, Rolling Stone described Battlefield 6 as a nostalgic military fantasy that operates in the same vein as multiplayer shooters from the 2000s — which aligns perfectly with the direction of the game’s soundtrack. An initial audio leak revealed licensed tracks from bands including Godsmack and Drowning Poolbut one collaboration went beyond that — rap rock masters Limp Bizkit signed a partnership with EA Games not just to include one of his classics (“Break Stuff”) in the trailer, but also to create new music for the game.

The first of them is the curiously titled “Making Love to Morgan Wallen“, released in September. The second, “Battlefield: The After-party”, is a complete reinterpretation of the traditional theme of Battlefieldproduced in collaboration with the game’s composer, Henry Jackman.

THE Rolling Stone has an exclusive video interview with jackman and the vocalist of Limp Bizkit, Fred Durstdetailing how this collaboration came to be. You can watch the full video below.

In the video, jackman talks about the development of the game’s new soundtrack and comments that a specific theme was essential. “In a very early meeting, I simply asked, ‘Does anyone have a keyword or phrase?’ And, as it’s not a romantic comedy — it’s a video game — the word that came up immediately was ‘destruction’”, he explains.

jackman — whose work includes films such as Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Kong: Skull Island (2017) — also has an extensive track record in high-profile games, such as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016), from PlayStation. When starting to compose for Battlefield 6he already knew exactly what kind of attitude he wanted to give to the project: “There were many aggressive techniques in engineering and [na produção]. It’s not polite.”

This lack of “education” in the soundtrack led jackman and his team to seek the appropriate partner to mark this new and more aggressive era of Battlefield. That’s where the Limp Bizkit.

Durstwho is also an avowed gamer, says that the process began with the doubt whether the composition would be completely new or based on something already existing. In conversation with jackmanthe singer says that the final decision was to expand what had already been done. “It was more like following the yellow brick road — until we reached the Henry”, jokes Durst.

Battlefield 6 is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PRAÇA. The game’s soundtrack is now available on streaming platforms.
