Totaling six spin-offs, the series expands its universe more and more; producer compares zombie franchise to Marvel
The TV series The Walking Dead aired for the first time in 2010 and already has 15 years of history, but could continue for another 15. That’s what Scott M. Gimplewriter and executive producer of the program, said during a panel at New York Comic Con 2025.
For him, there are still many new things to explore, and the locations where the stories take place offer wide creative possibilities. “There are many other continents to visit. The important thing is how [os personagens] evolve over time. It’s really exciting to see how far we can take this,” he said, according to NME. “In many ways, [os locais] tell us the story.”
The original series and Daryl Dixon
The Walking Dead had 11 seasons and officially ended in 2022. Based on the comic books by Robert Kirkmanthe original series portrays life in the post-apocalyptic United States, and follows a group of survivors who try to escape the undead (called “walkers”) — and the loss of humanity itself. The protagonist is Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), former police officer who wakes up from a coma in the middle of the zombie apocalypse and becomes the leader of the group.
But the narrative didn’t stop there: there are already six spin-offs in production. The fifth of them is The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixonwhich has just premiered its third season. The story follows Dixon (Norman Reedus) on a journey through France, during a mission to return home.
Gimple was with the cast at comic con 2025. “It is quite possible that we will see this group here in 15 years. […] Even with characters who have already done so many things, we can place them in different worlds where they have different challenges…”, he commented (via Variety).
According to the portal I love cinemaone of the dialogues from the recently released spin-off excited fans. During a conversation, the character Carol (Melissa McBride) mentioned a friend who lived in Barcelona before the catastrophe, a detail that some interpreted as a possible reference to Jeffrey Grimesbrother of Rick Grimes. This mention, after more than a decade of the original series, rekindles interest in a previously unexplored character.
The producer compares the world-building of TWD stories with that of TWD films Marvel and from A.D. “It was all one story. It went in all different directions,” he explained during the panel. “Even with characters who have done so many things, we can place them in different worlds where they face different challenges, and have them evolve through those challenges.”
Discover the spin-offs of The Walking Dead
The first spin-off was Fear the Walking Dead (2015), which returns the viewer to the beginning of the apocalypse, portraying the despair and disintegration of society through the eyes of a dysfunctional family – and how the characters adapt (or not) to the situation.
Then it came World Beyond (2020), which focuses on a group of teenagers who grew up in the midst of the apocalypse and embark on a journey across the country to save their father. Tales Of The Walking Dead (2022), the third derivative, is an anthology of independent stories that take place in the universe of The Walking Deadwhere each episode explores different aspects of the post-apocalyptic world.
Dead City (2023), the fourth release, is set after the timeline of the original series, as well as Daryl Dixon. It focuses on the characters’ adventure Maggie and Negan on a trip to ruined New York.
After the success of Daryl Dixona sixth spin-off debuted in 2024, titled The Ones Who Live. It brings the characters Rick and Michonne back to the screen, in the same period of future events, and builds an epilogue to their individual stories.
