After the well -known story of the slap of Will Smith to Chris Rock recently Oscar night and all the media excitement raised by the affair, here is the sentence from the Academy: the actor, Oscar winner along with the film King Richardis banned for 10 years from any event related to the organization, including of course the night of Oscar.
This is the official statement of the Academy:
The 94th night of the Oscars should be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work last year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and destructive behavior that Mr. and I saw. Smith who performed on stage.
During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation. For this, we regret. It was an opportunity for us to lead by example to our visitors, spectators and our Academy family around the world, and we were unprepared, unprepared for an unprecedented event.
Today, the Board convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, as well as accept his resignation. The Board has determined that for 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith will not be permitted to participate in any event or program at the Academy, personally or virtually, including, but not limited to, Academies.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for keeping cool under unusual circumstances. We would also like to thank our guests, nominees, presenters and winners for their resilience and kindness shown in our telecast.
This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s practice is a step toward the broader goal of protecting the safety of our artists and visitors and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope that this will usher in a period of healing and rehabilitation for all involved and affected.
The actor, who will therefore no longer participate in events related to the Academy, however, he will retain the prize he won in the event.
