Series based on a true story portrays a young gay man in the Marines and resulted in a statement from the United States Department of Defense
bootsNetflix’s military drama about a gay teenager who enlists in the United States Marines in the 1990s, has provoked an unexpected reaction from the US government. In a statement released to the magazine EntertainmentWeeklythe Pentagon classified the production as “woke trash”, accusing the platform of “feed an ideological agenda”.
The series, inspired by the memories of Greg Cope White (The Pink Marine), follows the journey of self-discovery and resistance of a young man who needs to hide his sexuality amid the rigid military environment of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” era.
According to the Pentagon spokesperson, Kingsley Wilson“under President Trump and Secretary [Pete] Hegseth, the United States Army is restoring the warrior ethos. Our standards are elite and neutral regarding gender or sexual orientation, because the weight of a backpack doesn’t care if you’re male, female, gay or straight”. Wilson added that “Netflix insists on compromising these values by promoting progressive trash to its audience and children”.
Despite the controversy, boots became one of the platform’s biggest hits, ranking sixth among the most watched productions globally. Critics also reacted positively: the The Guardian called the series “incredibly powerful”, while the HollywoodReporter highlighted that the work “criticizes the Army’s 1990s anti-gay policies but still shows respect for military camaraderie”.
The actor Miles Heizeropenly gay, stated that the series’ theme ended up becoming more current than expected. “When we started filming in 2023, we didn’t imagine it would be so relevant to what’s happening today. It’s curious — and sad — to see Boots interact so much with the present, even set in 1990.“, he said.
