Antonio Awards 2022 at Teatro Apolo (Exclusive)

The annual Antonyo Awards, which celebrates black theater performers on and off Broadway, is in person for its second edition.

Presented by Broadway Black, the show, which honors the work of Broadway and Off-Broadway creatives, will host the 2022 ceremony at the Apollo Theater. The live event will take place on October 10th in legendary Harlem, where all 29 competitive genderless categories will be featured, along with five honorary categories.

The brainchild of producer and actor Drew Shadd, the awards were streamed live on YouTube for the 2020 iteration of their inaugural event, which took place in June.

“The Antonio Awards were born to remember the joy that black theater performers created in a broken country,” said Schad, founder of Broadway Black. “For nearly 10 years, Broadway Black has championed black voices in many ways, and we are thrilled to move from our well-received initial broadcast to our first year awards ceremony at the legendary Apollo Theatre, the heart of live streaming. . . A play in Harlem.”

The nominating committee included theater artists Shade, Alaina Newell, Ayanna Prescod, Brittani Samuel, Juan Michael Porter II and Eric Emauni. Judith Lovell and Cody Renard Richard.

Announcements about this year’s performances and guest appearances are expected. Last year’s list of presenters and artists included Audra McDonald, Titus Burgess, Alex Newell, Jordan E. Cooper, Teyonah Parris, Ephraim Sykes, LaChanze and more.
