Netflix has set the date in his handThe first documentary from Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s new production company, HiddenLight Productions.
Documentary by Tamana Ayaz (Learning to Skateboard in a War Zone (If You’re a Girl)) and Marcel Metelsiffen (Watani: My homeland) will be released globally on the streaming giant and in select theaters on November 16.
in his hand The world premiere will take place at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9.
in his hand It tells the story of Zarifa Ghafar, who at age 26 became one of Afghanistan’s first female mayors and the youngest to hold the office. Set over two tumultuous years, the film chronicles his personal struggle to survive as his country crumbles amid the rapid withdrawal of Western forces and the Taliban’s return to power. Faced with this new reality, Zarifa will have to make the most difficult decision of his life.
“in his hand is an extraordinary piece of personal narrative that offers rare insight and real understanding of what women in Afghanistan have faced in recent years,” said Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton, executive producers of the film via HiddenLight. “When we first heard about this project, we had to get involved. We believe that girls and women, men and boys, everywhere will be inspired by Zarifa Ghafar’s hard work, intelligence and sheer determination.
Juan Camilo Cruz’s production team, Moondogs produced in his hand With Jonathan Schaerf of Propagate Productions. Filming began in 2020, when Zarifa was mayor of Maidan Shahr, capital of Maidan Wardak province in central Afghanistan. In August 2021, the country’s capital Kabul was in Taliban hands and Afghanistan was plunged into a humanitarian crisis.
Metelsiefen called the film “a wake-up call not to forget Afghanistan”.
“It is vital that the international community witness Afghanistan’s history and take real action to help its people,” said Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens.
Ayazi added: “It was revealing and a great experience to tell the story of my homeland of Afghanistan from the many perspectives of a female politician, an ordinary citizen and a Taliban commander. This is not just a movie for me, it tells my story and the story of millions of Afghans.”
