Samsung is doubling down on its momentum in the ad-supported TV space.
The technology company on Tuesday announced the rebranding of the Samsung TV Plus, originally launched in 2015 as an early entrant into the FAST space. As part of the rebranding, Samsung is launching premium content offerings that include Law and Order Special Victims Unit s NCISAs well as the launch of new original content, including its first autofocus channel, Ride or Drive.
Samsung TV Plus will also double its video-on-demand library in 2023 through partnerships with Lionsgate, Vice Media and more. The rebrand also includes a new logo for the service.
Content, including 200+ channels in the US and 1,600+ channels worldwide, is free on 2016-2022 Samsung Smart TVs and Galaxy Devices, as well as select models of their Family Hub refrigerators, starting in the US and Korea . .
As for premium content, Samsung TV Plus has partnerships with A+E Networks, The EW Scripps Company and BBC Studios, which includes four BBC channels shown on the service. Its news offerings include broadcasts from ABC News Live, CBS News, FOX’s LiveNOW and NBC News NOW, as well as local news and weather channels.
In addition to the new Auto Channel, the company will launch the Samsung Showcase, which will feature shows, events and other special programming. The channel will also feature exclusive content, such as the raw version of Demi Lovato’s Vevo Official Live Performance. Andy Singer, who previously worked at media company Alkemy X, Travel Channel and DIY Network, was brought in to further develop this segment as head of content.
There are many players in the ad-supported TV space, including Amazon’s Freevee, Paramount’s Pluto TV, and more recently, Disney+ and Hulu. Samsung’s goal is to have Samsung TV Plus on as many devices as possible, said Sang Kim, Samsung’s senior vice president of product and marketing, and the company is still looking for expansion opportunities.
“I think there is still a lot of room to improve the details of the service. For us, we’re looking at the international market, so we serve 24 countries, so there’s a lot of opportunity for us in that space,” Kim said.
