Pencils of Promise is gearing up for its first in-person gala after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, and has chosen its global ambassador Meadow Walker for the honors.
Walker, daughter of the late Paul Walker, will receive the Activist Award for her advocacy work, particularly for Pencils of Promise and its programming efforts, including water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as its WASH program.
Walker is the founder and president of the Paul Walker Foundation and an advocate for UNFPA, the United Nations agency for sexual and reproductive health. In 2020, Walker and the Paul Walker Foundation partnered with Pencils of Promise to build the Jasikan Education Demonstration Primary School in Ghana.
The event is scheduled for October 20 at the Museum of the Moving Image. Pencil of Promise honorees and past artists include Justin Bieber, Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Usher, John Legend, Lil Jon, Olivia Culpo and Wiz Khalifa. , Trevor Noah, Malala Yousafzai, Tori Kelly and Jay Shetty.
According to the event’s website, this year’s gala is being hosted by Scooter Braun of SB Projects, Brad Haugen of Westbrook Media, Pencils of Promise founder Adam Braun and the organization’s CEO Kailee Scales. The host committee members are Gabby Bourgeois, Gary Vaynerchuk, Rob Hamvey and Ricky and Lisa Novak.
