Netflix has revealed the cast and released the first images of its upcoming Australian original drama series. The child swallows the world.

An all-Austrian production, an eight-part limited series by Travis Fimmel (vikings), Simon Baker (The mentalist) and Phoebe Tonkin (H₂O – just add water) as the protagonist of Trent Dalton’s adaptation of the book of the same name. The cast also includes Felix Cameron, Lee Tiger Hall, Brian Brown, Anthony La Paglia and Sophie Wilde.

The child swallows the world., a very Australian novel that became an international bestseller, tells the story of a broken family in Brisbane in 1985. The publisher’s synopsis reads: “Lost father, mute brother, drug-addicted mother, heroin dealer. For known crimes of stepfather and nanny. As if Eli Bell’s life wasn’t difficult enough. He’s just trying to follow his heart and learn what it means to be a good person, but fate keeps putting obstacles in his way, one of which is Titus Bros, the legendary Brisbane drug dealer.”

John Cole (master and commander) wrote the screenplay and Bharat Nallur (spears), Jocelyn Moorehouse (evidence) and Kim Mordaunt (rocket) will film the episodes.

The child swallows the world. Produced by Brouhaha Entertainment of Australia with Content Anonymous and Chapter One and now in production in Brisbane, Australia.

Executive producers are Joel Edgerton, Troy Lumm and Andrew Mason of Brouhaha, Sophie Gardiner of Chapter One, Carrie Kohansky-Roberts and Toby Bentley of Anonymous Content.
