Jennifer Lopez looks back on her sister Ben Affleck’s wedding day.
Thinking of the August 20th wedding through her in JLo In a newsletter sent out on Thursday, Lopez shared that during their wedding, Affleck quoted one of her “favorite lines” that she wrote in a movie she made in 2016. live the night: “This is heaven. Right here. We are in it now.”
“I thought… how perfect,” she wrote. He went on to explain the stressors leading up to the ceremony, including the weather: “every day of the week it rained at sunset”, the “appropriately named love bugs” worrying about whether guests would arrive on time. A stomach problem that left them “recovering by the end of the week” and “a few more unexpected setbacks” that finally “made up for the wedding weekend”.
“The truth is, I never had any doubts. All week I felt a calm, simple certainty that we were in God’s hands,” he wrote.
Lopez said the wedding day was blissfully sunny, with a “clear blue” sky: “As the sun set behind the oaks covered in Spanish moss, a warm breeze swept across the lawn where our family and closest friends were sitting. . Eventually, I started walking the stairs that would become the path that would lead to the rest of my life. Ahhhh… this was really happening…”
Lopez then reflected on how she and Affleck talked “over twenty years ago” about how Marc Cohn’s “True Companion” would make the “perfect wedding love song”. To Affleck’s surprise, Lopez said, “Marc asked him to surprise him by singing at our wedding, and he was wonderful and generous to come.” She walked down the aisle with “things we dropped”, which she described as “a perfect choice because our five kids walked before me”. She added: “Between the dreams of our youth and the adult world of love and family we embraced that day, this wedding brought more than any of us could have imagined. We weren’t just getting married; We were marrying these kids into a new family.”
“Later, Ben told me that the chords of the song and the sight of Marc Cohn took him by surprise and allowed him to feel how our paths had met, inevitable, irrevocable and perfectly together,” he continued. “And when he saw me appear at the top of the stairs at that moment, it made perfect sense, but it still felt incredibly hard to believe, like the ultimate dream where you just never want to wake up. I probably would have had many of the same thoughts if I hadn’t been so focused on not changing my dress, but when I got close enough to see his face, the same wonderful thought occurred to me. That day, some old wounds were healed and the weight of the past was finally lifted from our shoulders. Full circle, and not the way we planned. Best.”
Sharing tons of photos from their rehearsal dinner and reception, Lopez reflected on how while the two were “laughing that they got remarried at our age the night before”, for them, “it was the perfect moment”. Nothing felt right to me anymore and I knew we would end up “settling in” in a way that you can only do when you understand loss and joy and are savvy enough to never take the big things or the stupid things unimportant. The distractions of the day keep you from enjoying every precious moment.”
“Years ago, we had no idea that the path ahead meant traveling through so many labyrinths and so many surprises, blessings and delights. It all culminated in this moment, one of the most perfect of our lives,” he concluded. “We couldn’t be happier. I wish you all the same happiness… the hard-to-find kind that is sweeter for the journey ahead.”
In July, Lopez and Affleck announced that they would be flying to Las Vegas to get married. “So, with the best witnesses you can imagine, a dress from an old movie and a jacket from Ben’s closet, we read our vows in a small chapel and exchanged rings we’ll wear for the rest of our lives. – He said at that moment. “But in the end, it was the best wedding we could have imagined. One that we’ve dreamed of for a long time and that came true (in the eyes of the state, Las Vegas, the pink convertible and the other) in a very, very long time.”
