Independence: Everything we know about the ‘decolonial’ 7th of September miniseries

The historical fact, full of contradictions, will gain an anti-colonialist version for the first time in Brazilian teledramaturgy

The sumptuous image of Dom Pedro I on the banks of the Ipiranga River, immortalized by Pedro Americo on the canvas of 1888, it is far removed from the reality of the 7th of September. The historical fact, full of contradictions, gives rise to the new entertainment project of TV Cultura, independences (2022).

In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence of Brazil, the network will show the first episode of the miniseries, which promises to explore much more than the reenactment of September 7th. Independence: Debut

The airing of the first episode of independences will take place on September 7, 2022 at 10:05 pm. Divided into 16 episodes, the historic series will be presented weekly on Wednesdays, until the end of the year.


Independence: What will the story be?

The title shows that the plot will be told from different perspectives, not just the story told in educational books. In addition to reconstructing facts already known to the public, independences will also show the impact of the arrival of the Portuguese Royal Family to Brazil and of the national oligarchy, the roles of the people: women, indigenous, enslaved and poor blacks.

The decimation of indigenous cultures and the merciless exploitation of enslaved blacks will also be featured in the series, as well as addressing the story of relevant characters put on the sidelines or who were violently erased by official history, such as the ex-enslaved Maria Felipa de Oliveira and the black musician José Maurício, made maestro of the court for his enormous talent.

Independences: Who’s Behind?

With an interest in dissecting the history of the Brazilian nation, Luis Alberto de Abreu and Luiz Fernando Carvalho came together to give life to independences (2022). sign the script Alex Moletta, Paulo Garfunkel and Melina Dalbonibased on research carried out by journalist Jose Antonio Severo.

Result of a collaborative work that took a year and a half for research, creation and realization, the team of collaborators has Kaka Werá Djecupé, Ynaê Lopes dos Santos, Cidinha da Silva and Tiganá Santana. The translation for the Kimbundu was in charge of the Professor Niyi Monanzambi (UFBA).
