In real life, Matheson is the only trained chef in the cast. for them At the center is “Carmi” Berzato (Jeremy Allen White), a culinary legend who struggles with her brother’s recent suicide and the psychological strain on her own psyche as she runs the family restaurant. Matheson also produces the show, which was created by his close friend Christopher Storer of Chicago.
Matheson, who says the cast has a group chat that “goes around all the time,” knows firsthand the pressures of restaurant life. A celebrity chef and food personality from Toronto (who regularly appeared on the series Vice) snacks) had a 10-year tenure at the now-closed Parts & Labor restaurant. “I opened my first restaurant at 26. When you’re young and running a business, there’s a lot of ego. There were many moments of humility,” the 40-year-old tattooed Canadian says via Zoom.
In May, Matheson opened his latest business, Prime Seafood Palace (944 Queen St. West). Scandinavian-influenced interiors feature polished wood and brass, while the menu highlights local meats and seafood (like Humboldt squid with stracciatella and seaweed) and the chef’s blue goose farm. He also runs Matty’s Patty’s Burger Club (923 Queen St. West) and Matty Matheson’s Meat + Three, a steakhouse in Fort Erie, south of the city, where he lives part-time.
