NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell’s 2021 compensation reached $21.6 million, up 31% from $16.5 million in 2020.
The owner of NBCU and pay-TV, media and tech giant Comcast announced the pay for him and other top executives in a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulatory filing last year on Friday. This was the second time Comcast’s annual proxy statement, released on Friday, has described Shell’s earnings in detail. The company used Shell in late 2019 to assume the role of CEO of NBCU effective January 1, 2020 with Steve Burke.
In its most recent regulatory filing, Comcast also reported nearly $34.0 million in 2021 to its chairman and CEO Brian Roberts, up 4% from $32.7 million in 2020. It generated $36. .4 million in 2019, US$35.0 million in 2018 and US$3,201 million.
Roberts received a slightly lower salary of more than $3.2 million last year and received stock awards of $13.5 million, an option bonus of $8.5 million and a performance-based bonus of $13.5 million. 8.6 million. Shelley’s salary also dropped slightly to $2.5 million, as did her optional bonuses to $3.4 million. But his stock rewards increased to $5.5 million and his performance bonus jumped from nearly $10 million to $5.9 million.
Shell “continued to successfully manage and mitigate the negative impact of the pandemic on NBCUniversal in 2021,” the regulatory document reads. NBCUniversal’s financial performance rebounded well in 2021, with revenue up 26.1% to $34.3 billion and interest, tax and depreciation-adjusted earnings (EBITDA) of 6% and $5.7 billion to Peacock, including losses.
Peacock ended 2021 with a monthly US bill of 24.5 million active, which management noted was about 75% of the previously set target for 2024. That number includes more than 9 million paying subscribers. Management said it would increase transmission investments for Peacock’s further growth, leading to potential delays in service arrival.
Roberts’ statement read, “This has led our company to strategically focus on connectivity, aggregation and streaming, which we believe will better position our company for the long term.” He continued: “Sir. Roberts has set the tone for our business to perform at the highest level, working together on our highly efficient additional businesses at Comcast Cable, NBCUniversal and Sky, and continuing to unite media and technology and leveraging our global technology platform. “At the same time, he has continued to respond to our company about the pandemic and strengthen our sustainability initiatives and stakeholders, all of which are focused on doing the right thing for all of our stakeholders and the wider community.”
Comcast, like many of its peers, changed CEOs in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, with top executives taking 20% pay cuts. At that time, Roberts, Shell and other top executives at Comcast also pledged to donate 100% of their 2020 salary to charity.
Comcast shares are down 2% in 2021 but outperform many media/entertainment and telecom conglomerates, including Walt Disney, then known as ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global), and AT&T. Its revenue increased 12.4% to $116.4 billion, while net income increased 34.4% to $14.2 billion.
Friday’s proxy statement also released a paycheck to several other top executives. Comcast CFO Mike Cavana earned $27.4 million in 2021 and $25.3 million in 2020. Comcast Cable CEO Dave Watson’s salary was $22.7 million, up from $22.7 million. $19.7 million. Dana Strong, who was named CEO of Sky in early 2021, earned nearly $16.0 million in her first year as the so-called “executive,” that is, a manager whose compensation is disclosed by the SEC. Prior to that, she served as President of Customer Services for Comcast Cable.
