John Fitian, president and CEO of the National Association of Theater Owners, says cinematographers are open to streaming Netflix movies if the streamer wants to monetize the original movies.
His comment was made at CinemaCon, where film companies announce their upcoming work prior to screening. The Las Vegas convention comes just days after a spike in streaming (exposure disaster) caused a stir when Netflix said it lost 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter.
And on Monday, the newly installed head of Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav said on an earnings call that the conglomerate would not “spend” on securing streaming subscriber growth. Instead, the studio’s integrated streaming platforms will complement existing traditional television and theater platforms such as Warner Bros. Movies and TV Series and HBO.
When asked about Zaslav’s comments at a press conference, Fitiani said: “Zaslav has defined what film work means theatrically. This brings the domestic market. ”
For years, Netflix refused to stick with traditional theatrical releases. we love these guys [Netflix]. [Co-CEO] Ted Sarandos knows film and television better than Hollywood. Our doors are open to offer a wider range of Netflix movies. “We would be happy to show your films,” said Fitian.
Currently, Netflix movies are typically not played on major networks. An exception is Cinemark, which has already shown titles such as Dwayne Johnson red warning.
Charles Rivkin, president of the Motion Picture Association, said he could not comment on the matter as its member companies include studios and Netflix. “Each company has its own strategy,” Fitian said.
Speaking at the annual meeting of movie theater owners, Fitian aimed directly to publicize the day and date across conglomerates. “I am pleased to announce that simultaneous release is dead as a serious business model and has been killed by piracy,” said Fitian. “When a pristine copy of a film gets on the internet and is distributed, it has a very negative effect on our industry.”
Rivkin, for his part, pointed out that piracy has spread to films that are presented simultaneously in streaming and in theaters. In his speech, Rivkin noted that he was “encouraged by our progress in the fight against piracy, and I’m also encouraged by the increases we’re currently seeing at the global box office.” Today’s blockbusters show that moviegoers still enjoy the purity of common space and social vertigo.
