Fungus that causes the apocalypse in The Last of Us generates strange behavior in ants
The Last of Us depicts the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse – a common story in pop culture productions. However, the infection does not happen because of a virus or with the dead who revive and come out of their graves. In the game and in the series HBOthe fungus Cordyceps is responsible for the emergence of creatures.
As frightening as it sounds, the fungus is not a fictional creation and exists in nature. As pointed out by the biology teacher Vanessa dos Santosin the website Brazil Schoolthe main victims are insects – with ants having the most notable cases of infection.

The Last of Us: What does the song played at the end of the first episode mean?
The behavior of an infected ant resembles that of a zombie, which may have served as an inspiration for Neil Druckmanncreator of the game Naughty Dog. In addition to tremors, the insect becomes disoriented and moves differently than usual. Muscular structures are consumed to maintain the Cordyceps alive.
The fungus infects arthropods to complete their reproductive cycle. Once the sexual phase of the cycle is complete, its host dies. After death, spores are released to infect other organisms. In the game, the same happens with humans. In the final stages of a clicker’s life, the human is taken to a dark corner, where it remains until it dies and releases spores, as pointed out by the Scientific American.
Despite the macabre aspect of the infection, the Cordyceps can bring benefits to humans. In the form of tea or soup, it can help in cases of low immunity and anemia.
