Comedian Dave Chapel was attacked onstage while filming the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday night, according to people who watched the show and images posted on social media.
Several event attendees posted a video of the incident on Tuesday night, apparently showing footage of Chapelle performing on stage when a man to her right ran up to her and threw her to the ground.
The man was then dragged away by security.
NBC News Los Angeles reported that LAPD confirmed they had arrested the man and that he was armed with a copy of a weapon “capable of removing a knife blade” when fired correctly. It is unknown if the man tried to use the weapon. Police said Chapel was not injured in the incident.
In video footage of the attack, Chapel is seen regaining his composure and joking, “He was a trans man.” The joke targeted an ongoing controversy surrounding some of the comedian’s jokes in his Netflix specials that were perceived to be transphobic.
BuzzFeed News Reporter Brianna Sachs, who appeared on the show, On twitter That the attack took place at the end of Chapel’s set and the man was “punched in the ass” by guards. He added that before he was attacked, Chapelle was talking about needing more protection because of his trans jokes after the controversy.
Also present was Stephanie Woosh, an ABC reporter, and she On twitter That Chris Rock, who was performing earlier in the evening, took the stage and joked, “Was that Will Smith?”
Later in the screen call video, Chapelle spoke more about the incident, calling to thank comedian and actor Jamie Foxx. “When you’re in trouble, Jamie Foxx shows up in a sheriff’s hat,” Chapel said.
“II thought it was part of the show, I didn’t know what the hell…” Foxx jokes in response.
Then Chapelle says, “I got this on the back of his head. His hair was cute. pad”
Fox then takes a few minutes to address the crowd and Chapel. “Listen, I just want to say that this man is an absolute genius. “We have to make sure we always protect him,” Fox said.
He added: “For every comedian that comes here, it means everything. You are a genius. You are a legend, I am very happy and we will not allow anything to happen to you.
Chapel then jokes with Foxx: “I’ve been doing this for 35 years. I just dropped in – backstage. I always wanted to do this. ”
Chapel performed at Netflix Is A Joke Fest, an 11-day stand-up comedy festival sponsored by streaming giant Netflix. The festival features 130 comics with the biggest names in the industry in its inaugural lineup, including Seth Rogen, Chelsea Handler, Aziz Ansar, Bill Bury and Conan O’Brien. The Los Angeles-based event takes place at 25 locations.

The attack on Chapel is likely to raise concern in the comedy community, as audience members rush onto the stage and attack the comedians. The issue has been under scrutiny since Will Smith beat Chris Rock at the Oscars last month.
