Why Feeling Hunger While Dieting Is Actually An Illusion: Scientific Confirmation

You want to lose those extra pounds, but the feeling of hunger during a diet scares you? Don’t worry! Scientists are convinced that in most cases this is just an illusion that can be defeated.

Unless you follow a strict, extremely low-fat diet, you don’t have to worry about being physically hungry. In fact, the desire to eat something is imposed on us by our psyche. Your brain is not yet capable of such frills!

And now in more detail.

You have surely noticed that the transition to a new nutrition system, especially if it involves restrictions, leads to weakness, mood swings and discouragement.And, most likely, you associated this with a lack of calories. But in fact, this is all an insidious mind game.

Thus, according to a study by Vaden in 1987, 28 overweight people were divided into 2 groups:

  • The daily diet of the first group was only 500 kcal.

  • The daily diet of the second group was also limited, up to 1200 kcal.

At the same time, none of the participants knew which group they were in.

The experiment lasted 2 months. The 500 calorie group lost more weight but were less hungry: that is, they ate less, but did not suffer from it!

In 2008, another similar, but more rigorous study took place. 27 people took the test in 48 hours.

They received a different diet in the form of a gel:

  • At 2294 kcal/day

  • At 313 kcal/day

And what do you think? Reactions, learning, memory, logical thinking, mood and level of satiety were similar! In the second group, people did not notice such a monstrous lack of calories.

And here are the results of the study in 2011. People received milkshakes. Everyone received a 380 kcal milkshake. But one group was told it had 180 calories and the other group was told 620 whole calories.

The second group reported more intense saturation. In addition, these people also decreased the hormone ghrelin, responsible for the feeling of satiety!

The moral is this: if we convince ourselves that the new diet is full, then we won’t experience any hunger! The main thing is not to go to extremes and make sure that your diet contains enough useful nutrients. And above all – valuable fats and probiotics and fiber important for digestion!
