The cast of the 1988 western Young Guns reunited for a group selfie at a Fan Expo event in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday, nearly 38 years after the film's release. Dermot Mulroney, now 62, shared the photos, captioning them '38 years later... Young Guns rides again.'
Mulroney was joined by original Regulator stars Charlie Sheen, 61, Emilio Estevez, 64, Lou Diamond Phillips, 64, Casey Siemaszko, 65, and Kiefer Sutherland, 59. Terry O'Quinn, 74, who played lawyer Alex McSween in the film, also appeared in the reunion snaps.
Young Guns starred Estevez as Billy the Kid, part of a deputized posse called the Regulators depicted during the Lincoln County War in New Mexico in 1877-78. The film helped launch several of its young stars, then part of Hollywood's so-called Brat Pack generation, into wider fame.
Dermot Mulroney's career since Young Guns
Mulroney played 'Dirty' Steve Stephens in the film. He went on to star in the blockbuster romantic comedy My Best Friend's Wedding alongside Julia Roberts in 1997, and continued in the genre with The Wedding Date and Must Love Dogs, both in 2005, and last year's Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. The Young Guns reunion also brought him back together with his My Best Friend's Wedding co-star Rachel Griffiths.
Charlie Sheen's rise, fall and comeback
Sheen played Richard 'Dick' Brewer in the film. The youngest son of actor Martin Sheen, he began making amateur films as a boy alongside his brothers and friends Sean Penn and Rob Lowe.
He broke through with Red Dawn in 1984, followed by Platoon in 1986 and Wall Street in 1987, before appearing in Eight Men Out, Major League, Hot Shots! and Three Musketeers in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He replaced Michael J Fox in Spin City from 2000 to 2002, earning critical acclaim, before landing his best-known role in Two and a Half Men from 2003.
Sheen was fired from Two and a Half Men in March 2011 following a public dispute with the show's creator, Chuck Lorre. He rebounded with the sitcom Anger Management from 2012 to 2014 and has earned nominations and wins at the Golden Globes, Emmys, SAG Awards and People's Choice Awards.
He has also spoken publicly about struggles with drug and alcohol abuse and marital problems. In November 2015 he confirmed he was HIV positive, revealing he had been living with the diagnosis for four years after first being outed by the National Enquirer.
Kiefer Sutherland's Hollywood legacy
Sutherland played Josiah Gordon 'Doc' Scurlock. His father is the late actor Donald Sutherland. He built early success with a run of hits including Stand By Me, The Lost Boys, Young Guns and its sequel, and Flatliners.
He is best known for playing Jack Bauer in the Fox series 24 from 2001 to 2010, winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the role. Sutherland has also dealt publicly with alcohol issues, pleading guilty to a fourth DUI charge in 2007, according to the Daily Telegraph, and serving 48 days in jail on a drunk-driving charge in 2008.
Emilio Estevez, leader of the Brat Pack
Estevez was credited as the leader of the Brat Pack, a group of young stars that also included Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, Andrew McCarthy and Judd Nelson. His breakout came in 1983 with The Outsiders, followed by The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo's Fire in 1985.
He went on to appear in That Was Then... This Is Now, Maximum Overdrive, Wisdom, Stakeout, The Mighty Ducks and its sequels, Judgment Night and Bobby. He later moved into directing and writing, returning to acting in 2018's The Public alongside Alec Baldwin, Christian Slater and Jena Malone, and reprising his Mighty Ducks role in the Disney+ series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers from 2021 to 2022.
Lou Diamond Phillips and Casey Siemaszko
Phillips rose to fame playing Ritchie Valens in the 1987 biopic La Bamba before appearing in Stand and Deliver, Young Guns and its sequel, Courage Under Fire and The Big Hit. In 2018 he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and was sentenced to two years' probation.
Siemaszko's first film role came in the 1983 Rob Lowe film Class, which also featured John Cusack, Andrew McCarthy and Alan Ruck. He went on to appear in Silence of the Heart in 1984 with Sheen and Chad Lowe, and in 1985 starred in Secret Admirer with C Thomas Howell and Back to the Future with Michael J Fox.
He also appeared in Stand By Me in 1986 alongside Cusack, Corey Feldman, River Phoenix, Sutherland and Wil Wheaton, and later took a role in the Michael Mann film Public Enemies in 2009.
