The musician opened up about his tragic family history and emotional growth, explaining how home video recordings left behind by his father served as the primary inspiration for the new record.
Warren lost his father to terminal cancer when he was just nine years old. His childhood was marked by further tragedy when his mother developed severe alcoholism and eventually forced him out of the family home at age 17. For an extended period, Warren was left homeless, living out of his friends' cars. When he was 20 or 21, his mother also passed away due to health complications stemming from her addiction. Despite these profound hardships, Warren maintains immense affection for his parents, particularly for his father, who showed him immense love during his early years.
Personal loss and emotional healing
In a video published on the official social media account for his ongoing concert tour, Warren discussed the key role his father played in shaping Wilchild. He explained that creating the project allowed him to understand more about himself, describing the album as a reflection of where he currently stands in his life.
Warren contrasted the new record with his earlier discography, noting that his first albums focused on a man who was broken, whereas Wilchild is centered on a man attempting to heal. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to confront those complex emotions and share them publicly, characterizing the release as a new project, a new sound, and a renewed version of himself. He also acknowledged that everyone involved in the process shed tears while bringing the music to life.
In addition to his tour video, Warren sat down for a candid interview with American television network CBS, set to air in full on Friday, August 28. During the interview, he spoke openly about his ongoing grieving process following the death of his loved ones, stating that he believes he will never truly stop mourning the loss of his parents. He reflected on the deep connection between mourning and affection, noting that there is something very special about loss and love.
Searching for answers on stage
When the CBS interviewer asked whether music had allowed him to make progress in his grief, Warren answered that it had completely. He explained that songwriting enabled him to find words for something as inexplicable as mourning. He revealed a poignant personal routine, sharing that every single night on stage during his tour, he still scans the crowd hoping to spot his parents in the audience.
Although he knows they will never appear, Warren admitted that a part of him still holds onto hope, adding that it would be the coolest thing in the world if they were to show up one day. He also reflected on how his past will impact his future when he becomes a father himself. He admitted that his heart will be completely broken when he has children, imagining what it will feel like to hold his own child and realize that his father experienced that exact sensation. That realization, he noted, forces him to reflect on the overwhelming fear his father must have felt upon realizing he was terminally ill while holding his young son.

The home video recordings that inspired Wilchild begin at Warren's birth, capturing his father's initial excitement and joyful anticipation. However, by 2005, when his father learned that his illness was terminal, the tone of the recordings shifted dramatically, with a noticeable change in his father's voice as he spoke to his children.
Warren described one heartbreaking moment in the footage where he turned and walked away to play while his father was speaking. Even though little Alex walked off, his father kept talking directly to the camera, aware that his children would watch the tapes years later as adults. Warren expressed how painful it is to watch those videos today, wishing he could tell his younger self to turn around and hug his father instead of playing with water guns and the fun toys his father had bought to make him happy.
He noted that his father lived entirely to see his children excited and joyful. Looking back on the footage, Warren realized that his father was not speaking to his childhood self at that moment, but addressing the person Warren has become today, describing the realization as fascinating yet heart-wrenching.
John Mayer collaboration on lead single
To pay tribute to his father, Warren sought out a musical collaboration with his father's favorite guitarist, who served as his main inspiration throughout the album's creation. In recent months, Warren hinted at the secret guest artist, revealing that the album's lead single and title track, Wilchild, featured a minute-and-a-half guitar solo by the mysterious musician.
Hours before the album release, Warren posted a video finally revealing the identity of his collaborator: Grammy-winning guitarist John Mayer. Mayer contributed the extended 90-second guitar solo to the single, fulfilling Warren's dream of honoring his father's memory on the track.
Warren, who initially gained widespread recognition as an online content creator before launching his recording career, is currently performing on tour as Wilchild makes its global debut.
