Spanish striker Álvaro Morata is close to finalizing a loan move to second-division club Leganés from Italian side Como, a deal that would allow him and his wife Alice Campello to settle back in Madrid.
The potential transfer marks a fresh chapter for the couple following their recent reconciliation, as they navigate key decisions for their family and four children. Morata has already given his approval for the exit operation, with negotiations advancing rapidly in recent hours.
Como is currently structuring a loan departure for the forward, who has been considering interest from multiple teams. Although Morata had previously expressed a strong desire to wear the shirt of Getafe, Leganés has now emerged as the primary option to complete his return to Spanish football.
Negotiating a return to Spain
A move back to Spain represents a notable shift for Morata, who had previously voiced serious concerns about playing in his home country due to mental health considerations. Speaking weeks ago to his friend Mario Suárez on the broadcast program El camino de Mario, Morata reflected on his difficulties handling public criticism.
Morata told Suárez that while he would like to play for Getafe, he believed he was not mentally prepared to play in Spain because of the negative comments he would face from spectators in visiting stadiums. The striker admitted that public commentary continued to affect him deeply, though he recognized that he could not change who he was as a person.
Despite those earlier hesitation points, returning to Madrid allows the Madrid-born forward to close a significant cycle in his personal and professional life. Madrid is where Morata and Campello experienced some of their happiest years together, and both view the Spanish capital as their primary home base.
Family life and marital reconciliation
The family has experienced a turbulent few years shaped by frequent moves across Europe to accommodate Morata's sporting career. In 2024, following the public announcement of their marital separation, Morata left Atlético Madrid to sign for Italian club AC Milan and relocated to Italy. Campello initially chose to remain in Madrid with their four children, feeling that the capital was her true home despite having family and friends in Italy.
Months later, the couple managed to bridge their differences after realizing it was best for their children to live near their father. Campello packed her bags and relocated to Italy to join Morata, allowing them to resume their relationship and put their divorce plans on hold. A year after their move to Italy, the family relocated to Istanbul when Morata signed for Turkish club Galatasaray, before later moving to Como.
Throughout their international travels, Campello maintained her ties to Madrid, where she had found her dream house and was actively remodeling it to suit her family's specific preferences and needs. She had postponed settling into the property while waiting for an opportunity to launch it properly, a moment that now appears to have arrived with Morata's prospective transfer.
