British-American actor Anthony Hopkins declared that performing in front of a green screen in Marvel superhero movies makes no sense, asserting that no acting was required for his role as Odin in the Thor trilogy.
The two-time Oscar winner explained in an interview with The New Yorker that playing the Asgardian king involved little more than donning armor, wearing a beard, sitting on a throne, and shouting.

Speaking to writer Michael Schulman, author of Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep, in an interview published by The New Yorker on February 27, 2021, Hopkins confirmed that he had written NAR on his script after reading the screenplay for the 2011 film Thor. He explained that the letters stood for No Acting Required.
Hopkins recalled that the phrase originated from a story about classic actor Gregory Peck during the filming of Moby Dick. Someone spotted N.A.R. written on Peck's script, and when asked what it meant, Peck replied that the scene simply required looking out at the sea.
The veteran star noted that modern superhero productions rely heavily on staging and post-production visual effects. In such environments, settings, creatures, battles, and even co-stars are frequently added months after filming concludes.
The Mechanics of Superhero Filming
Despite his candid assessment of special effects shoots, the Welsh actor clarified that he did not hold superhero cinema in total contempt. He praised co-star Chris Hemsworth, remarking that the Australian actor looked like Thor, and commended director Kenneth Branagh for having a clear vision while helming the original 2011 Thor movie.
His comments highlight a recurring critique of major blockbusters, where digital spectacle can relegate actors to components within a massive production machine. Performers often navigate sets governed by green screens, floor markers, and computer-generated imagery rather than physical environments and direct co-star interaction.
Hopkins, who has worked as an actor, composer, director, and producer, has built one of Hollywood's most acclaimed careers over several decades, playing kings, presidents, villains, and troubled figures. He is widely recognized for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 thriller The Silence of the Lambs, a role that earned him his first Academy Award for Best Actor.
A Career Across Decades
He secured a second Best Actor Oscar in 2020 for his role in The Father, portraying Anthony, an elderly man whose reality unravels as he copes with dementia. His extensive filmography also features celebrated performances in dramas such as The Remains of the Day.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hopkins portrayed Odin, the father of Thor, the god of thunder and heir to the throne of Asgard. He appeared across three installments of the franchise: Thor in 2011, Thor: The Dark World in 2013, and Thor: Ragnarok in 2017.
