Baking soda foot baths soften rough heels in ten minutes

Baking soda foot baths offer a simple home method to soften rough heels after long days in closed shoes, Polish outlet Onet reported.

Closed footwear restricts airflow and creates friction against the feet throughout the day, causing skin on the heels to thicken into callouses. The recommended routine replaces aggressive scrubbing with gentle soaking to protect dry skin. Mixing three tablespoons of baking soda into four to five liters of warm water creates a solution that softens calloused areas within ten minutes.

Water for the bath should not be too hot, and the soak must remain brief to prevent skin dehydration. After soaking, feet should be gently patted dry with a towel without rubbing. Softened areas can then be lightly buffed using a pumice stone or pedicure file without applying excessive pressure, which could cause injury.

Moisturizing Routine for Dry Heels

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a mild alkaline compound often used in beauty care to soften water and skin tissues. Pumice stone is a light volcanic rock formed from cooling lava, widely used in pedicures as a manual abrasive to remove dead skin cells.

Following exfoliation, a thick moisturizing cream should be applied to clean heels. For very dry skin, formulations containing urea are suitable. Applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly over the lotion creates extra protection, and wearing cotton socks overnight increases the hydration benefits.

Urea is a keratolytic compound naturally present in healthy skin that aids hydration by softening dense protein structures in calloused tissue. Petroleum jelly acts as an occlusive barrier that seals in moisture, while cotton socks provide breathable protection.

Weekly Maintenance and Daily Care

The treatment should be limited to one or two times per week. Applying moisturizer daily after a shower may prove more effective than frequent exfoliation with a pumice stone. The routine was highlighted by Ukrainian news agency UNIAN, which previously reported on autumn manicure trends for 2026.
