Brad Pitt's daughter Vivienne drops father's surname

Brad Pitt's youngest daughter Vivienne has officially dropped the actor's surname, making her the fourth of his six children with Angelina Jolie to do so.

The 18-year-old attended a court hearing to complete the process, with the decision taking effect on Monday, according to reporting by People magazine. Her official name has now changed from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie.

Vivienne is the latest sibling to formalize the break from their father's name. Zahara Marley, 21, Maddox, 25, and Shiloh, 20, previously took identical steps to remove Pitt from their legal records.

Shiloh initiated the legal process immediately after celebrating her 18th birthday, filing paperwork in California to strike Pitt from her official documents. Her petition was formally granted in August after meeting all state statutory requirements.

At the time of the approval, Shiloh's lawyer, Peter Levine, stated that the young woman had reached her decision following painful events, although he offered no further details regarding the specific circumstances behind the request. Vivienne, Maddox, and Zahara later followed their sister's lead, turning into a binding legal alteration what several members of the family had already practiced in public settings by using only the surname Jolie.

Legal status of Pax and Knox

Of the six siblings, Pax and Knox have not publicly filed legal requests to discard the Pitt surname. Knox, who is Vivienne's twin brother, has made no public announcement indicating an intention to pursue a formal name adjustment through the courts.

Pax has nonetheless been linked to reports concerning distance from his father. In 2023, the Daily Mail published details of a 2020 social media post from a private account attributed to Pax, which featured severe criticism directed at Pitt.

Marriage and custody battles

Pitt, 62, and Jolie, 51, were together for 12 years before Jolie filed for separation in 2016. Pitt is an Oscar-winning Hollywood actor known for starring in Fight Club and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, while Jolie is an Academy Award-winning actress and director celebrated for Girl, Interrupted and Maleficent.

The former couple shared six children during their relationship, combining international adoptions and biological births. Jolie adopted Maddox before she began dating Pitt, who subsequently adopted the boy. Jolie also adopted Zahara before Pitt became her legal adoptive father. Pax joined the family when Jolie adopted him during the relationship, with Pitt completing his legal adoption afterward. Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne are the couple's three biological children.

The family separations followed years of prolonged friction and public litigation. After nearly a decade of legal proceedings that included custody fights over the children, allegations of physical assault, and indications of deep personal estrangement, the former couple concluded their divorce in 2024. Reporting on the legal proceedings was also shared by CNN Brasil journalist Mirella Cordeiro.
