With tickets sold out, the traditional city preview featured artists such as Daniela Mercury and Geraldo Azevedo
“Carnival is back. Today is the kick-off with the municipal ball”, decreed Mayor João Campos and host of the 57th Municipal Ball of Recife, which took place last Saturday evening, 11, and marked the meeting of the local public with the revelry after two years of absence due to the covid-19 pandemic.
According to the organization, 10,000 tickets went on sale and, for the first time, they sold out before the gates opened. More than R $ 500 thousand has been raised. Since 2013, the proceeds of the event have been donated to social actions, for the benefit of organizations with recognized work of assistance in favor of the Recife community.
“It’s an exciting time because we missed each other. After two years, being able to see the city in celebration, receiving many tourists. Here is a traditional dance from Recife. From 1961, when the then mayor Miguel Arraes held the first edition, until today, this tradition is still alive, still present in Recife. It is a day of celebration, in which all of us will be able to celebrate and have fun, experience the culture of Recife and show Brazil and the world that the biggest and best carnival in the world is in Recife,” Campos celebrated.

“The heart is filled with the desire to celebrate. Also filled with joy and gratitude for this bad time that was in the past. Let’s celebrate, let’s build! And I am very happy to be here to be able to celebrate and honor, together with João, his first carnival at the head of the town hall,” summarized the federal deputy of São Paulo, Tabata Amatral, who accompanied the mayor of the city.
The feeling is shared by anonymous revelers, artists and personalities who were at the party. “I have great expectations for this year’s carnival. I’ve been waiting for a long time after the pandemic”, sums up the entrepreneur Rebeka Fonseca.

“I have very high expectations for this carnival after all this time at home. I think we all are. It’s the first time I’ve been to the municipal ball, even though I’m from Recife. But this desire to have Carnival close, every day, even before Carnival, made me be here today,” said the lawyer Arthur Gomes.

Great protagonist of the previews of Recife, the 57th edition of the Municipal Ball had 17 attractions. Names such as Daniela Mercury, Geraldo Azevedo, Spok Frevo Orquestra, Claudionor Germano and Marina Sena took to the stage of the party, which only ended this Sunday 12 early.
Geraldo Azevedo is one of the prize winners of the Recife carnival in 2023. He has been chosen as the legitimate representative of the popular culture of Pernambuco, as one of the guardians of the frevo. “It is a great honor to receive this tribute, especially when Carnival returns after two years with people struggling to dance,” he said.

“And now that February has arrived, we have to celebrate a lot and the celebration comes from the soul, from the heart, from the body, from the spirit. We are looking forward to this carnival that is coming now, and also to arrive with the freebie, I feel lucky,” she confessed minutes before performing at the ball.
Bahiana Daniela Mercury, known as the queen of the axé, the traditional rhythm of revelry in Salvador, declared her excitement at participating in the municipal ball of Recife. “I got excited during rehearsals I don’t know how many times, I don’t even know how I’m going to sing today. We have combined carnivals with the love we have. Since before I thought I was queen of everything, I think I only became queen because I know how to brake,” said Daniela.

The Orquestra Popular do Recife, led by maestro Ademir Araújo (Formiga), also performed at the event, with the participation of Nonô and Claudionor Germano, the greatest bastion of frevo in Pernambuco; the Malassombro Orchestra and Maestro Spok’s Orchestra, which received a veritable constellation of artists, such as Almir Rouche, André Rio, Marron Brasileiro, Nena Queiroga, Bia Villa-Chan and Gerlane Lops.
