Mayara Lima debuts as queen after going viral as a princess at the 2022 carnival

How did you get into samba?
I have been samba since I understand myself from people. In fact, when I began to understand things, I saw that I was part of this world. I also had examples at home: from my grandmother, who was queen of the drums, and from my uncle, who was master of the drums. But it was my mother who took me to a samba school. It was she who introduced me to what a samba school was.
What is the path to becoming a battery princess like?
A samba school is organized in segments. There are the muses, the princesses and the queen of drums. It’s as if the princess were a pole above the muse, but they arrive in front of the battery, next to the queen. This is usually someone who can represent the school’s home community.
How is the preparation to be queen of drums?
I work with carnival all year round, especially in the last year when carnival was off season. I didn’t stop. A little later I went to teach samba in Europe. In July, I immediately returned to school activities and still teach. Preparation is greater than being ready for the four days of Carnival. The people who make their living are always prepared. But of course, when the date approaches, we intensify our preparation with gym workouts, a strict diet and everything that can help us be healthy in body and mind so that we can handle everything.
Which queens inspire you?
When I started going to samba schools, perhaps due to lack of opportunities, I only saw people from the school itself. There was no internet. Queens I admired are queens I still admire today, such as Soninha Capeta, Evelyn Bastos, Bianca Monteiro and Raissa Oliveira, who has since left office but is an eternal queen due to the size of the legacy she left .
Do you think you can inspire other girls too?
I feel it every day and I am very happy, despite the scale of the responsibility. It’s great to be the queen of drums, you make many dreams come true. Every trailside girl dreams of being queen, so representing her is also her dream. My biggest intention in front of the drums is to represent the girls who dream of it, don’t let their dream die, that they too can be what they want to be.
What is your reading of famous non-community queens?
I see no problem as long as he is loyal to his community. As much as she’s there in front of the drums, the queen alone isn’t a question and she doesn’t count a point, therefore, she doesn’t interfere with anything. The point is to familiarize yourself with the community and try.
What are your aspirations now that you’ve become Drum Queen?
I love carnival. Whatever position I occupy, I will be happy. But as queen, I’m satisfied. I have the busiest job I could possibly have at Carnival. I am very proud of myself, of having slowly conquered my space. I’ve been a dancer, I’ve been a muse, I’ve been a princess and today I’m the queen of drums, and it was all thanks to my effort, my credit. I am a fully realized person.
