Veteran actress Judi Dench (“Belfast”) has revealed that her degenerative eye condition has made it increasingly difficult for her to read scripts and memorize her lines. The revelation was made during Dench’s appearance on ‘The Graham Norton Show.’
“That proved to be impossible, and because I have a photographic memory, I needed to find a machine that would not only teach me my lines but also tell me where they appear on the page,” said Dench. “It was really easy for me to learn and remember the lines. I could do the whole ‘Twelfth Night’ right now.”
This isn’t the first time Dench has spoken out about his vision problem. In 2021, during a conversation with the Vision Foundation (a London charity that helps people with vision loss), the actress revealed that she needed to ask friends for help reading scripts aloud, so to be able to memorize his lines.
“You find a way to move forward and get through things that you find very difficult,” Dench said at the time. “I had to find another way to learn jokes and stuff, which is having great friends who repeat everything over and over and over. So I have to learn through repetition and just hope people don’t notice too much if all the jokes are completely disastrous.” !”
Despite the degenerative condition, Dench has managed to maintain good spirits. He even remembered a funny case that happened during his work.
“I was doing ‘Branagh Theater Live: The Winter’s Tale’ with Kenneth Branagh a few years ago, playing Paulina, and after we performed for about three weeks [teatro] Garrick, he told me[..]: “Judi, if you were to say that speech about six feet to your right, you would be saying it to me and not the team,” he recalled. “I depend on people to tell me!”
Judi Dench will next be seen in the drama ‘Hallelujah’, which opens in UK cinemas on March 17th.
