The elegant peasant who hosted Queen Elizabeth II in SP dies

Renata da Cunha Bueno Mellão was a legendary society hostess and style icon

On February 4, business and rural woman Renata da Cunha Bueno Mellão died at the Sírio Libanês hospital, in São Paulo.

She was considered one of the most elegant and cultured women in Paulista society. She was educated in Europe and spoke several languages.

In November 1968, Renata Mellão and her husband Sérgio hosted Queen Elizabeth and her consort, Prince Philip, on the family farm in Campinas (SP).

The honor took place in a violation of the monarch’s official agenda. At the age of 42, he took advantage of the break to ride on the traditional clan property of São Paulo.

The ruler of the British has always been fond of horse riding. He rode for the first time at the age of 3 on a pony. He left about 150 horses in his estate.

That was Elizabeth’s only visit to Brazil. She toured some regions in 11 days in the country. Two moments stood out: the inauguration ceremony of the MASP, in Avenida Paulista, and the meeting with Pelé, in the Maracanã.

Coincidentally, Renata da Cunha Bueno Mellão and Elizabeth II died at the same age, 96, and of natural causes.

The São Paulo socialite leaves behind three children, Eduardo, Maria Eudóxia and Renata, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The daughter of the same name is the founder and director of the Museu A Casa do Emprego Brasileiro, in São Paulo.
