Meet the Swiss jewelry brand for Michelle Bolsonaro seized at the airport

Traditional Chopard is among the favorite luxury brands of billionaires and celebrities such as Oscar winner Marion Cotillard

Nothing else is talked about in high society and in the world of politics. The seizure of a jewelery set that would have been sent from the kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the then first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro, is also the subject of the moment in the press.

The generous gift – necklace, ring, watch and a pair of diamond earrings – was detained in the inspection carried out by a federal revenue agent at the Guarulhos airport, in SP.

It is prohibited to enter the country without declaring purchases or gifts exceeding the $1,000 mark. The jewels intended for Jair Bolsonaro’s wife cost 3 million euros, approximately R$ 16.5 million.

The pieces have a certificate of authenticity issued by Chopard. Founded in 1860 in Sonvilier, Switzerland, the brand today belongs to the German Scheufele family, which owns assets worth $1.5 billion (R$8.2 billion), according to the North American magazine ‘Forbes’.

The jewels and watches produced in the Geneva and Fleurier ateliers are coveted by those who appreciate luxury goods. Buyers are mega-entrepreneurs, heirs to traditional clans, members of monarchies, millionaire athletes and fledgling artists.

One of Chopard’s biggest fans is French actress Marion Cotillard, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Édith Piaf in the film “Piaf – O Hymn to Love”.

In 2015, she was invited to develop a bracelet for the jewelry company. She sold so well that she later signed a sustainable jewelry collection with the company.

Other celebrities who often use Chopard “treasures” at parties and red carpets include Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Rihanna, Julia Roberts and Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio.
