Meet Chvrches, the trio that will open Coldplay’s concerts in Brazil

The Scottish band will also perform solo in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro; comments from the group on the expectations of meeting the Brazilian public for the first time

Lauren Mayberry, Ian Cook AND martin doherty treads for the first time on Brazilian soil with an important mission: to animate the audience of the 11 shows that the Coldplay will do in the country during the month of March.

The trio forms the Scottish band chvrchwho won the responsibility of being the opening act of the presentations of the British group in São Paulo, Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro between the days 10 and 28 March.

Plus, they’ll do two more solo performances during their visit to Brazil: on March 16, at Audio, in São Paulo, and at Sacadura 154, on March 24, in Rio. Tickets for both dates are still available.

“We’re really excited to go to Brazil. It’s been a place we as a band have been looking forward to going to for the past 10 years. But the opportunity hasn’t really presented itself until now,” Cook says in an interview with Stadium.

Career

Chvrches was formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 2011. Two years later, the trio released their first studio album, titled The bones of what you believe inreaching number 9 in the UK Albums Chart and number 12 in the US.

Twelve years later, the band has released four albums, songs on the soundtracks of productions such as Hunger games AND Heartstopper and about 4.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

“I feel like we’ve learned so much over those ten years — not just the industry stuff, but about ourselves as well. We learn as songwriters and that sort of thing can’t be forced, it has to come with time,” Lauren points out.

Despite more than a decade into their career, the notion of the trio having fans in such far-flung places is still jaw-dropping. “The feeling that you might be a long way from home and that there are people coming to your show is still mind-blowing to me,” Doherty reveals.

The musician says that the three came from humble origins “musically speaking” and, therefore, was struck by the affection that non-European countries show with their music.

The band mainly works with synth pop and alternative pop rhythms, as well as elements of electronic music. The most recent song of the group, titled Abovewas released in February as a transitional project between albums.

“The first time we will play [essa] the live music will be in Brazil which I think is a cool thing to do because it took us so long to go to the countryside. It’s nice to have something special for when we get there,” comments Lauren.

Coldplay invitation and concert expectations

The invitation to open Coldplay’s concerts came via an email sent to the trio’s manager. As soon as they heard about the opportunity, Lauren, Iain and Martin were thrilled.

“We are very thankful to them for giving us the opportunity to go to Brazil for the first time. They were also very kind and allowed us to organize our personal exhibitions, which people don’t always allow you to do in this type of situation,” reveals the vocalist.

On top of all that, he says he’s excited to attend the British band’s concerts, since he’s only seen the group led by Chris Martin in festival performances. “I feel like it’s going to be a crazy show and I think watching people enjoying the show will be a transformative experience.”

At the time of the interview, Chvrches had not yet decided on the full lineup for performances in the country. They do reveal, however, that the opening show will run for 45 minutes. “I’m not going to tell you how long the Coldplay show will be, because it’s a spoiler,” Lauren jokes.

One way or another, the trio argue that they’re trying to manage expectations. “These shows sold out before we were even added to the package. It’s a real privilege to play in front of so many people,” says Martin Doherty.

“I think in many ways we’re going to go as if it’s a festival crowd. We’re going to try to bring all the energy we have into getting new fans. We’re going to have the best show possible,” he adds.
