The British singer talked to ‘Estadão’ about the new album, winning the copyright for her songs, wanting to return to Brazil and even marrying director Taika Waititi
In his personal life, the 32-year-old artist has also achieved great things. In August she married the actor and director Taika Waititi47 years old, in a private ceremony confirmed only in January 2023, with the release of the music video You only love me.
The video shows Rita dressed as a bride – and special guests, like Kristen Stewart AND Sharon Stone – in a marriage that, unlike real life, ends disastrously. The song is the kick-off of the singer’s next album, which does not have a release date yet, but has already been released by her.
In conversation with Stadium On the phone, Rita said she was in the most mature moment of her career, talked about her desire to return to Brazil after an extraordinary performance at Rock in Rio 2022, and talked about the copyright discussions that are changing the music industry. Watch:
In your appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”, you said your new album is “more than just music”. How do you think this phase of your life and career is different from the previous ones?
I’ve had an incredible experience the last couple of years making this album because it feels like every day there’s something new to write about. I decided to start jotting down song ideas I had in the middle of conversations I was having with my husband and basically create a love story. This album that he decided for me and it became my love story for all of you. I hope it makes you feel nostalgic and super happy when you hear it.
Are you still recording songs and finishing production, or is the album already finished?
The album is already finished, actually. We just finished mixing it, so I’m really happy.
In the music video for the song “You Only Love Me”, a wedding takes place which, of course, is very different from what you had in real life. How was the creative process behind this video?
It was so funny because I thought, “Let’s make this a funny answer,” because I know everyone was asking, “Is she married? Is she really married?” I thought doing a comedic turn would be a smart thing to do because I’ve never really answered the question, but I think it’s been clarified through my music.
I always say: you will get the answers with songs. But yeah, I just wanted to have fun and invited all my friends to join. I have had many guest appearances such as Kristen Stewart, Sharon Stone, Addison Ray and many powerful independent women who inspire me. It went really well.
Were these cameos your idea? How did you invite all these women to appear in the video?
Yes, it was my idea. Basically I just wanted everyone to be involved. It was like the guest list for my dream wedding, with people I’ve always loved. It happened naturally. I asked people and they said, “Sure, sure.”
You recently visited Brazil and performed at Rock in Rio 2022. How was the experience?
My God, that was incredible. I have to tell you: I feel the need to go back more often. Had to go to South America for Lollapalooza [em 2020]but the festival was cancelled [por conta da covid-19] and I was very upset. And then the Rock in Rio opportunity came along and I was like, “Great, at least I get to see my fans in person.”
I think I have a lot of fans in Brazil, I don’t know why, but I’m very grateful that they like them. I know Rita is a very popular name in Brazil, it’s an old name. It seems to me that all mothers call her Rita or something like that. But I had a lot of fun. I was very surprised that everyone was singing the songs. I have to go back, really.
Already planning to come back? Who knows on tour with this next album?
Yes, I will definitely come back with my next album. It won’t be until next year, but I think I’ll do some festivals in the summer and then travel with my tour in 2024.
You have a very strong social media presence and your fans are always asking you to come to Brazil. How big is the difference between this online communication and the connection you create with the audience during live shows?
Change everything. I feel like that’s what makes it real. You see people saying “come here, come to Brazil”. But when you see it in real life, you’re like, “Wow, they really wanted that.” I think it’s a great reminder of why I do what I do: connect with people, change their lives, and maybe inspire them. That’s all I want to do.

In 2022, when you signed a record deal with BMG, you gained full copyright control of your music. How important was that to you?
It meant everything to me. I have gone through many experiences during my music career from 2012 till today, many affairs, ups and downs and empty promises. I think any girl can relate while reading this. It’s like when you really want it to work and one person has the power to make it happen or take it all away from you.
It was something I also wanted to use to inspire a lot of young people that you don’t have to follow the traditional record deal. There are many other ways you can do this and own all the rights to your music, earning all the money you deserve. I don’t want to go into too much detail because it’s a bit boring, but it’s really cool, it’s a new way of thinking about music.
This seems to be a trend now: female artists get the rights to their music. How do you see this process in the music industry?
I think if you can inspire someone, then that’s what you need to do. I think there are so many options in music these days, you can do whatever you want, it’s not like it used to be. i would say that [um bom conselho] is: think carefully before “signing” your whole life.
Would you say you are in the most mature moment of your career? If yes, why?
Yes, I think so. I feel that everything has changed. I think I’m at a point where I feel very free. I’ve turned from a girl into a woman and I think the song represents that.
How do you think this has influenced the way you write and create your music?
It changed because I gained control over it. I choose who to work with, how I want it done and stuff like that. When you’re on a record label, it’s very easy to get fooled, so you have to be smart and take control when you can.
Fans always ask about your next record and you say “soon”. How does it feel to know that people are eager to hear something you’ve created?
My God, it’s really good. It shows me that I’m on the right track, so it makes me want to do everything even better. Make better music videos, make better shows, make better tours. It makes me work harder.
Finally, you are already a big name in music. Is there something you want to do or things you still want to achieve?
Well, I definitely want to make more films. I want to do a little bit of everything. I’ve been really inspired by these women who do a little bit of everything, like Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Cher and Madonna. All these women who, over the years, have done more than one thing. This has always been my dream: to make music, but also to work with cinema.
