NBCUniversal loses CEO after “misconduct” investigation.

Conglomerate Comcast dropped a bombshell this Sunday (4/23) by announcing that executive Jeff Shell will immediately step down as CEO of NBCUniversal. The decision was made on a “mutual” basis following an investigation into a misconduct complaint against Shell.

In its statement, Shell admitted having an inappropriate relationship with a colleague at the company, which it deeply regrets. He also apologized to Comcast and NBCUniversal staff.

“I had an inappropriate relationship with a woman at the company, which I deeply regret,” Shell said. “I’m sorry to have let down my colleagues at Comcast and NBCUniversal, who are the most talented people in the industry, and having the opportunity to work with them over the past 19 years has been a privilege.”

The media executive has led the company since taking over as CEO on January 1, 2020, reporting directly to Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts. Shell was announced as the successor to former NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke in December 2019.

As CEO, Shell oversaw the company’s broad portfolio, which includes news and entertainment television networks, the Universal film studio, as well as major sports and television production operations, the group of television broadcasters, theme parks and even more.

It is not yet known who will replace Shell at NBCUniversal. He is a veteran of Comcast, having held key positions with the company, including chairman of the board of Motion Pictures and Entertainment at NBCUniversal, president of the programming group at Comcast and president of NBCUniversal International.

Shell began his ascent as studio president of Universal in 2013, after managing NBCU’s international operations for a decade. Initially, he was seen more as a business bureaucrat with little direct experience when it came to running a film empire. But that view quickly changed.

In fact, Shell’s entrepreneurial vision has had a huge impact across the industry. Even before the company launched its Peacock streaming service, it was a strong advocate of shrinking the viewing window so that a title could be made available at home sooner. When the pandemic hit, Universal signed a landmark deal with theater owners, allowing films to be made available on premium VOD within 17 days of their theatrical release and cutting the wait period for a streaming release in half. mainstream.

Shell’s departure comes at a crucial time for NBCUniversal, as it must decide what to do with its share of Hulu. On the other hand, the company has reason to celebrate the success of its streamer Peacock, which has reached over 20 million subscribers by the end of 2022 in the US alone. The platform, however, has yet to get an international rollout.

This isn’t the first time a top NBCUniversal figure has left the company due to a scandal. In 2020, Vice President Ron Meyer departed after admitting to an extramarital affair and attempted extortion.

In a similar case last year, Jeff Zucker resigned as president of CNN for failing to disclose a consensual relationship with a colleague.
