Jolie adopted a big-eyed girl from Ethiopia in 2005. The baby was just a few months old, and when she was born she was given the name Yemsrach, common in her native country (but rather dissonant to the Russian ear). In one of the African dialects, it means “joy and happiness”.
For her first daughter, Angelina chose the new name Zahara. In Arabic, it means “shining flower”. And the second name – Marley – the baby received in honor of the Jamaican musician, the father of reggae style Bob Marley, whose work and fate always touched his new mother very much.
The first joint child of Angelina and Brad was born in 2006. Then they were calmly happy together, and the appearance of the long-awaited baby became a real dream come true: both of them had long been ready to become biological parents.
For Jolipitta’s daughter, they chose a rare name of biblical origin. Translating “Shilo” from Hebrew is certainly not easy: it is one of the concepts that means the omnipotence of God in its entirety. The girl’s middle name, Nouvel, is borrowed from French, Jolie’s mother’s mother tongue, and means “new.”
A year later, Brad and Angelina adopted a three-year-old Vietnamese boy. His biological mother was a heroin addict, and in his hometown of Ho Chi Minh, the baby obviously expected nothing good. The name Pham Kwan Sang which he received at birth is very common in Vietnam and means “beautiful”.
Having become Jolie-Pitt, the child received a name consisting of two words in different languages: Pax is translated from Latin as āpeacefulā, and Tien from Vietnamese means āskyā. Peaceful sky – why not?
In 2008, Angelina gave birth to twins of opposite sexes. And again, together with her husband, she decided to encrypt important information for herself on their behalf. Daughter Vivienne Marcheline received her middle name in honor of her maternal grandmother, Marcheline Bertrand. And his first name can be translated from French as “live”. Angelina’s mother died a year earlier from cancer, so the actress honored her memory.
And baby Viv’s brother, Knox Leon, was, it turns out, named symmetrically, because his name was dedicated to his father’s family. Knox is the generic middle name of Brad Pitt’s grandfather, who has Irish roots. The name Leon, “lion”, understandable in many languages, is also written in the documents of the boy in the Irish style.
Of course, only Angelina herself knows and can explain the whole complex scheme of six children’s names (though she’s unlikely to). But it is clear that for her offspring, the actress has chosen options that emphasize the richness and diversity of genetic, spiritual and cultural ties within the family. It remains to be hoped that Angie’s children will be as open to the world as their mother.
