The Cannes director defends Johnny Depp’s participation in the festival

The 2023 Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on Tuesday (May 16), has already become the subject of controversy. Accused of covering up abusive artists, the director of the event, Thierry Fremaux, even asked the press if journalists really believed the statement. The reason for the confusion is the exhibition of the French period film ‘Jeanne du Barry’, starring Johnny Depp (‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’) after he was accused of assaulting and raping his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

The director’s placement is a response to actress Adele Haenel, who accused the event of collusion with the abusers. The 34-year-old actress, winner of the César (the Oscar of French cinema) and star of “Portrait of a young woman on fire” (2019), has announced her retirement for not agreeing with the way the his country’s industry protects aggressors. You mentioned names such as Roman Polanski, winner of the César for best director in 2020, actor Gérard Depardieu and Dominique Boutonnat, president of the National Film Centre. But Thierry Fremaux insists Adele’s claims are false, at least as far as Cannes is concerned, despite Depp.

At the press conference to present the 76th edition of Cannes, the director said he didn’t care about the actor’s judgement. “I don’t know Johnny Depp’s image in the United States. I don’t know what it is, Johnny Depp interests me only as an actor. , it’s me,” said Frémaux.

However, he chose the film starring the actor and directed by Maïwenn to open the renowned French festival.

“If Johnny Depp was banned from acting, or if the film was banned, we wouldn’t talk about it. We saw Maïwenn’s film and thought it might be in competition. I don’t know why he cast Depp, but this is a question for Maïwenn, not for me.”

Fremaux even criticized Adele Haenel. “She didn’t think about any of that when she came to Cannes, unless she was suffering from some kind of mad dissonance,” she added. “People use Cannes to talk about some problematic issues, and that’s normal, because we give them that platform. But if you think this is a festival for rapists, you wouldn’t be here listening to me, you wouldn’t be complaining that you can’t get tickets to some exhibitions” , he added.

Although he partially won a libel case against Heard, Depp lost a UK case against The Sun newspaper, which labeled him a “wife beater”. And, during the American trial, Depp confirmed that several written texts are true in which he expresses pleasure in practicing violence against the actress, arguing that it is about artistic freedom.

The Cannes film event lasts until May 27 and presents 21 films in competition, a third of which are directed by women: a record for the festival.
