Actor Leonardo DiCaprio used his Instagram account this Sunday (28/5) to express admiration and praise for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In a text published alongside a photo of Brazil’s president, DiCaprio celebrated the policies aimed at indigenous peoples proposed by the current government and also drew a parallel with the country’s previous administration, criticizing it for having, he said, violated the rights of these populations.
“In a victory for indigenous rights, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced the demarcation of six indigenous lands: TI Arara do Rio Amônia, TI Kariri-Xocó, TI Rio dos Índios, TI Tremembé da Barra do Mundaú, TI Avá- Canoeiro e TI TI Uneiuxi. This progress comes after the previous government not only paralyzed the demarcations, but violated the rights of the indigenous peoples of the country,” wrote DiCaprio.
The Hollywood star also cited the decrees and initiatives of the Brazilian government and congratulated those engaged in the fight for indigenous peoples. “Lula too: signed a decree to establish a committee focused on the protection, recovery, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in indigenous territories; restarted the National Council for Indigenous Policy, which allows equal participation of indigenous peoples in the presentation and monitoring the implementation of public policies targeting indigenous peoples; secured more than $2.4 million for the economic development and recovery of indigenous Yanomami communities in the Amazon. Congratulations to all involved in these milestone achievements “.
DiCaprio’s publication comes days after an internal scenario of dissatisfaction among indigenous communities over the possibility of voting for the Marco Temporal and the weakening of the structure of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI), two initiatives of the Chamber of Deputies. Protests are expected in the country’s capital in the coming days.
