“I don’t know anything about her!” : why Anthony Hopkins does not communicate with his only daughter

If you have never heard of this name, it is not surprising: the girl has not communicated with her father for many years. And, unfortunately, now there are no more prerequisites to think that they will suddenly reconcile. There was a temporary break in their life, when Abigail even starred with her father in the same movie, but the relationship deteriorated again.

Her mother Abigail Petronella Barker was married to an actor from 1966 to 1972. In 1969 a daughter was born.

In 1973 Anthony married Jennifer Linton and lived with her for 29 years.

Abigail rarely saw her father: “I saw him maybe once a year. It was sad, but I tried not to think about it. True, it went wrong: 16-17 is a terrible time, I constantly suffered from the fact that we had almost no contact with him. I was angry and distressed.”

In the early 90s, Hopkins managed to improve relations with her daughter, she even starred in small roles in two films. None of them say why it all went wrong again. “It seems to me that relations should be improved on both sides,” Abigail said in an interview with the Telegraph. “I don’t know if it was possible to do everything right.”

The 82-year-old actor doesn’t seem to care too much about his relationship with his only child. In a 2018 interview with Radio Times, he noted that he didn’t know if he had grandchildren or where his daughter lived: “I don’t know anything about her life. People break up, it happens. Families break up, you have to live your own life. People make choices.” When told he had responded too coldly, Anthony replied, “Yeah, cold. But life in general is a cold thing.

He couldn’t clearly explain why he rarely saw his daughter as a child, but admitted in 2002: “I guess I’m being too selfish. I was not a good husband and father.”

One possible reason is that he struggled with alcohol addiction for many years: “I still don’t believe that’s how my life has been. I should have died drunk in Wales or something.” This period fell on the 70s, and her problems became one of the reasons for the divorce from Abigail’s mother.

In 1974 he moved to Los Angeles, and his first wife and daughter remained in England.

Anthony Hopkins’ daughter became a jazz singer. “I was alone when I was a kid,” she said. “I had a lot of fun in my company. Music meant a lot to me. I played the piano, but it wasn’t my favorite instrument. My father was going to be a concert pianist and then he became an actor. When I was seven, I brought a guitar to school and everything changed.

Abigail managed to make a name for herself without the help of her famous father: “I decided to do everything on my own…I had to prove to myself that I was worth something. I go through life following my intuition and it helps me get through the tough times.

Despite the difficult relationship with her father, Abigail was able to live without him.
