Pelé’s inheritance, worth around $15 million (R$75 million), is the subject of a legal dispute involving former goalkeeper Edinho, the king’s eldest son; Gemima Lemos, stepdaughter of the former footballer; and widow Márcia Aoki.

According to the will, 30% of the fortune went to Márcia, with the rest to be divided among Pelé’s seven children, who died in December 2022, aged 82, from colon cancer.

Joshua and Celeste Nascimento, sons of the former footballer, have filed an appeal in court for their stepdaughter Gemima to be recognized as a socio-affective daughter, which would give her the right to an inheritance.

In February of this year, Edinho had two requests to be the executor of the inheritance distribution process denied by the justice of São Paulo. In the initial request, dated February 13, the former goalkeeper said he was responsible for managing his father’s assets during his last moments in hospital.

Judge Suzana Pereira da Silva, of the 2nd Family Court, responsible for the case, did not accept Edinho’s request. Furthermore, she ruled that the right to be the executor rests with his widow, Márcia Aoki.

The former goalkeeper has also asked that the spin-off of his father’s inheritance be done in secret. However, justice also denied it and, as the judge underlined, the trial could affect possible creditors of Pelé, who died in December 2022, at the age of 82, from colon cancer.

Roland Boldrin

The work of the artist Rolando Boldrin, who died at the age of 86 in November 2022, has been the subject of controversy between his children and his widow, Patrícia Boldrin. In her will, the presenter of the iconic Mr. Brazil wanted her to have control over the copyrights of her songs. However, the decision was contested by Vera Boldrin, the artist’s only daughter with singer Lurdinha Pereira.

Marcus Boldrin, Rolando’s nephew legally adopted as a son when he was 12, would also have the rights to the singer’s work. He would be seen by the law as one of the heirs.

However, Rolando’s legitimate heirs stress that the court’s decision would be unconstitutional. Since Brazilian legislation provides that half of the assets left by a deceased must be destined for the heirs.

They challenged the validity of the will, stating that they were “not sure of the veracity of the document because it was not signed and made in their presence” or even held in a formal meeting.
