Epic mistake: Why Bill Murray regretted voicing Garfield

The actor deeply regretted having voiced the capricious cat in the film “Garfield”, released in 2004.

We the audience love Garfield, but Bill Murray, remembering the character he voiced, only winces. This work reminds him of an epic error caused by his inattention.

Here’s how it was. After receiving the script, Murray immediately agreed to voice the ginger cat. He had no doubts about the project, as Joel Coen’s name was on the title page. The actor thought we were talking about one of the Coen brothers – those same cult directors who shot The Big Lebowski, Fargo and Barton Fink. But he was a different Joel Coen, a much less famous and successful screenwriter. In English spelling, their names differed by only one letter: Joel Coen and Joel Cohen, respectively.

Murray was soon signed to a contract and was already looking forward to working with the Masters. What a disappointment awaited him when he arrived at the studio. But there was nowhere to go.

“It was a long silence of two minutes. So maybe I swore a little,” he recalls.

Murray, of course, did his job, but since then he’s become keen on reading scripts and the names of writers and directors.

Critics crushed Garfield, but at the box office it was relatively successful – with a budget of 50 million dollars, the picture made more than 200 million.
