Actress Angelina Jolie has set the address for her new creative venture, Atelier Jolie, a workshop for underrepresented tailors and artisans from around the world. It has leased 57 Great Jones Street, in New York City, where the studio where Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat lived and worked in the 1980s operated. The transaction was announced on Friday (7/7) by Meridian Real Estate Capital Group , represented by John Roesch and Garrett Kelly.
According to Roesch, Angelina Jolie intends to open her new venture “as soon as possible”. The building was previously available to rent from Meridian Capital Group for $60,000 a month with a minimum 10-year lease.
A building with a lot of history
The building, with three floors and more than 2,000 square meters of interior space, maintains its facade adorned with street art, a feature that Jolie has decided to preserve as a public tribute to Basquiat – who, between 1983 and his death in 1988, he created his art on the second floor of the building, acquired by Warhol in 1970. “He loved the facade of the building, which was marked with street art in memory of Basquiat,” Kelly said in a statement.
On her official Instagram account, the actress said, “It’s a privilege to be in this space. We will do our best to respect and honor your artistic legacy with community and creativity. Hope to see you there.”
Next to the text, a video shows the facade of the building, framing Angelina and her daughter Shiloh, while her son Pax has scratched the name of Atelier Jolie on the site.
However, the building’s history goes far beyond its connection to these artists. Originally built in 1860, the site was once the home of Brighton Athletic Club in 1904, when it was owned by gangster Paul Kelly, also known as Paolo Antonio Vaccarelli. Over the years, the building has had a variety of uses, including a steelwork and kitchen supply business, as well as housing the Bohemian Japanese restaurant.
Although already leased, the building is only expected to open as Atelier Jolie in 2024.
