Pain and betrayal: why the star of the film “Moscow does not believe in tears” Natalya Vavilova left the cinema

The roles of Sasha Tikhomirova in the cult film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” and Taya Petrova in “Joke” made young Natalia Vavilova a star and opened up incredible prospects for her. However, at the height of her fame, the actress suddenly left the cinema. What happened?

It seemed that all that could connect Natalya Vavilova to the cinema was the proximity to the Mosfilm film studio. The parents’ apartment was located not far from the main domestic “dream factory”. The actress was born into a large diplomatic family and, of course, she was destined for a completely different fate.

Parents even tried to ban their daughter from acting in films. For example, in the movie “Moscow Doesn’t Believe in Tears”, we may not have seen Vavilova at all. On the eve of the shooting, mom and dad practically isolated their daughter from contact with the filmmakers and forbade her to answer the phone. Vladimir Menchov was in despair – he had previously worked with Vavilova on the “Rally”, and now he saw her only as the daughter of the main character of the new film.

The personal charm of actor Alexei Batalov, also involved in the film, saved the deal. He came to Natalia’s parents and convinced them to let their daughter go to the shooting. Seeing her success, her parents also did not insist on entering MGIMO – they allowed her to go to VGIK, which Vavilova got in 1984.

During and after training, the actress actively performed, but in 1986 a fatal incident occurred that put an end to her future career.

On the set of the film Nikolai Podvoisky, Vavilova fell from her horse – the assistants brought to the site not the animal with which the actress had previously trained, but a stallion with a bad back. He, of course, immediately threw the jumper. Panicked director Yuri Boretsky begged Vavilova not to complain and not tell what happened on set, and in return promised to wait for the actress until she recovered . But in reality, he acted differently. A few days later, Vavilova was already informed that another actress had been taken in her place.

This incident was a big disappointment for Vavilova. Mental trauma is harder to heal than physical trauma. The actress took a long vacation, which she spent with her beloved husband Samvel Gasparov (by the way, she met him at the premiere of the film “Moscow Doesn’t Believe in Tears”).

However, the break did not help either – on the contrary, Natalya felt even more that she was moving away from the world of cinema and acting again, remembering the betrayal of her like-minded people, she did not had no desire. As a result, in the early 1990s, Vavilova starred in two more films, one of which was her husband’s film, and ended her career.

Since then, the Soviet star has had almost no contact with the press and has devoted himself to gardening and charity. Not so long ago, the actress was completely alone: her husband died in 2020, she has no children.
