Dwayne Johnson makes record donation to Relief Fund for Actors on Strike

Actor Dwayne Johnson (“Black Adam”), aka “The Rock,” has donated $1 million to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund as the actors’ strike nears its third week. The exact amount of the donation is being kept under wraps, but has been described as a “seven-figure donation”, making it the largest single donation ever received by the foundation.

Johnson’s donation comes at a critical time for the entertainment industry, as the Actors Guild of America (SAG-AFTRA) strike enters its third week. The foundation, which provides financial assistance to union members, relies on donations and grants to maintain its services.

Courtney B. Vance (“Lovecraft Country”), president of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, expressed her gratitude for Johnson’s generosity, saying, “This is him saying, ‘At a time like this, I’m standing here and I’m not going anywhere, whatever you need me to do.’ And that sends a big message to other people to do the same.”

Significant impact

Johnson’s donation will have a significant impact for many actors who are struggling financially. Foundation grants typically provide $1,500 for each member, but in emergency situations, members can receive up to $6,000.

Cyd Wilson, executive director of the foundation, highlighted the importance of Johnson’s donation, saying, “It’s the largest single donation we’ve ever received from a single person at one time. And the amazing thing is that this single check will help thousands of actors keep food on their tables, keep their children safe and their cars running.”

Thank you and call for solidarity

Vance thanked Johnson for his “tremendous generosity, compassion and initiative to speak meaningfully for our community.” He added, “On behalf of the thousands who will be helped by your historic donation, thank you, thank you, thank you.”

The Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strike has entered its second week with no quick end in sight. The SAG-AFTRA foundation is preparing for a long strike period, with the expectation that the situation will last until the end of the year.
