Some actors seem to be born to play bad guys. Their appearance, their mannerisms, their movements… But once they play a negative character, the role of a notorious villain haunts them for many years. So what are these on-screen anti-heroes like in real life?
Gary Oldman
Gary Oldman is perhaps the most famous Hollywood actor who has embodied more than a dozen villainous images on screen. He acted in films such as: “The Fifth Element” (Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg), “Leon” (Norman Stansfield), “Bleeding Romeo” (Jack Grimaldi). In later works he got more diverse characters – Sirius Black and James Gordon. Workshop colleagues note that Gary can masterfully transform into any hero.
“People have a rather strange and wrong idea of me. I keep reading about “crazy” or “genius”, “changeable”, “evil” Oldman. It’s probably because people associate me directly with the characters I play. But after all, any actor who tells you he’s becoming the character he’s playing is either a liar or a diagnosed schizophrenic,” Oldman noted in an interview.

In the life of an actor, everything has not always been so smooth. He was undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction, experienced painful breakups… But, despite all this, people who know Gary well say he is far from the image of the “psychopath” he played more than once in the cinema.
With age, the actor settled down. From now on, he no longer travels from one set to another and has long since said goodbye to bad habits. In 2017, Oldman got married for the fifth time and now devotes all his time to raising children.
Ralph Fiennes
The one whose name should not be pronounced. Ralph Fiennes played Lord Voldemort in the Potter series. But this is far from the only negative character in the actor’s career. In Hollywood they joke: “Need a villain – call Ralph Fiennes.”
Off screen, the life of an artist is no less interesting. Wraith belongs to the impoverished aristocratic family of Fiennes and is the eighth cousin of the current Prince of Wales. In the images of all the characters of the actor there is a certain arrogance and aristocracy – features inherent in Rafe himself.
According to him, the main thing in life is the art of negotiation. “He who does not know how to negotiate and compromise is doomed. The art of negotiation is the most important condition of our existence in society,” says Fiennes.
In ordinary life, he is taciturn, withdrawn, hence the negative attitude towards social networks. But the actor has a special weakness for beautiful, successful women: he says he’s not cut out for marriage and can hardly imagine himself as a father. Thus, Rife is in constant search.
Willem Dafoe
A mention of this actor freezes the blood. What is his Spider-Man goblin worth?! Unusual facial features, a crazy look… You will be surprised, but Defoe gained worldwide fame after playing Jesus in the movie The Last Temptation of Christ. The photo caused a mixed reaction, but made Willem popular.
“I don’t think people even try to see me as a normal person. But I am a normal person”, explains the artist.
Despite the fact that in people’s memory he forever remained a villain, the actor does not give reasons to consider him a villain. Defoe grew up in a large family and, unlike his heroes, in real life he is quite a positive person. Willem can also be called an exemplary family man. He lived with Elizabeth LeCompt for 27 years. In a civil marriage, the couple’s only child, Jack Defoe, appeared. Now the actor is married to Italian Jada Kolangrad.
Mads Mikkelsen
Dr. Lecter, sadistic millionaire Le Chiffra, and wizard Kaecilius are all Mads Mikkelsen. This actor has hundreds of piggy bank roles, but he became famous thanks to the pictures in which he played the main antagonists.
“I have a clearly articulated principle. I always try to find something good in bad guys, and vice versa – flaws in good guys. Therefore, I’m not sure there is pure evil or good. Each of us has both, ”the actor said in a conversation with reporters.
In Mads’ homeland of Denmark, he was recognized as a real sex symbol. However, we hasten to offend the fans: the artist is an exemplary family man and a loving father. Mikkelsen has been married to Hanna Jacobson for over 20 years. The couple have two beautiful children: daughter Viola and son Carl. And no matter how hard the paparazzi try to find scandalous details from the life of this handsome man, everything is in vain.
Christopher Waltz
This actor gained worldwide fame thanks to the film Inglourious Basterds. The role of Standartenführer Hans Landa, of course, glorified Christoph Waltz, but, as the actor himself feared, assured him of the image of “the eternal Fritz”.
“Read, go to museums, listen to opera… Just, for God’s sake, don’t study life through movies, TV and the internet,” the artist urges.
As for Christoph’s real life, he can safely be called a citizen of the world. He likes to travel and learn new things. But social networks and cell phones do not support the spirit.
Christophe has a good sense of humor, but, according to the actor himself, not everyone perceives his jokes adequately.
Christoph Waltz has been married twice. From his first marriage to Elisabeth Urbaninch, the actor has three children. The second wife was costume designer Judith Holste. In 2005, the couple had a daughter. Waltz does not stop there and still participates in the filming of cult films.
