Paula Picarelli, ex Globo, will launch a new edition of the book ‘Seita – The Day I Joined a Religious Cult’
“I thought this review process would be easy, because I also write for the theater and I’m used to re-reading my texts. I thought this story wasn’t even about me anymore, but an important topic to discuss. But, as soon as I opened the book to do the review, all the feelings are back. On the one hand it’s very difficult to get in touch with this case, but on the other hand it’s also really funny, because it was so crazy. It’s a mix of emotions,” said l actress in the interview.
Paula commented that she’s always had “the CDF profile” and that she was “very immersed in the experience” when she believed it to be true. “It’s been eight years. I can say that I have a master’s and a doctorate in the field.”
The book is a fictional account of how she became involved in a new religious cult, the Portal da Divina Luz – fictitious name. In 2018, at the launch of the book, she commented in other interviews that her “weaknesses” led her to enter the Santo Daime – she, however, did not reveal the name of the community or which other celebrities were part of it.
In the interview with Globo he comments that the group was led by two women. “I think that’s why we haven’t had any cases of sexual abuse, as seen in others. I think that’s also why this story has never been made public. I myself don’t have the courage to say anything. I created a fiction to tell this story. It was a cult with all the requisites, including psychological and moral abuse and death threats,” he revealed.
The actress also says that, even creating fictitious names, some people came to her to question the publication of the book. “There were those who identified with a character and didn’t like it and those who didn’t identify with anyone and felt left out. Some thought I took it too lightly and others that I took it too hard. And many stopped talking to me”, she reveals.
“What surprised me is that I thought everyone would come to the same conclusion and we would laugh about it together. That didn’t happen. I think some people didn’t do that review and reflection on what happened.”
But she celebrates by helping the others, who wrote to her after the book saying they were able to recognize the pitfalls.
