‘It’s only going to get worse’: Fatal coincidences in the fates of Grace Kelly and Princess Diana that led to a tragic end

One of them was a Hollywood star, the other was a shy girl from British high society. Both embodied the image of a fairy princess in real life. But their lives at the palace are eerily similar in their darkest moments.

Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier III of Monaco at the Cannes Film Festival in April 1955 and married him a year later.

Diana will meet Charles for the first time 21 years after these events – the acquaintance will take place during a black grouse hunt at Althorp, the home of the Spencer family, in November 1977. Then Charles courted Sarah, Diana’s sister, but already on July 29, 1981, the whole world will watch with bated breath the fabulous wedding ceremony in which Diana and Charles will become husband and wife.

But despite the years between Diana and Grace, the lines of their lives seem to be drawn by an evil genius.

The two princesses had to face the infidelities of their husbands.

The Prince of Wales’ continued romance with his longtime lover Camilla Parker-Bowles has been confirmed by Diana herself in a notorious interview.

“There were three of us in this wedding, so it was a bit crowded,” she told interviewer Martin Bashir at the time.

Diana herself was also known to have had an affair during her marriage to military officer James Hewitt. In the same interview, she confessed:

“Yes, I was in love with him. But I was very disappointed.”

It couldn’t be easier for Grace Kelly. Indeed, according to biographer Wendy Lee, Prince Rainier had three mistresses within a month of his marriage to Grace, which of course made the American “humiliated and extremely unhappy”.

Loneliness in the palace

Diana and Grace first met in person in March 1981 at a musical concert at Goldsmiths Hall, weeks after Diana and Charles’ engagement was announced. By the way, this was their first joint appearance under a new status at a public event.

It seems that the representatives of the two monarchies immediately recognized each other as kindred spirits.

“I remember meeting Princess Grace and how wonderful and serene she was – but there was darkness below, I could see that.”

It seems Kelly also noticed how uncomfortable Diana was at the event. Grace, then 52, took her aside for a private chat. Diana shared her anxieties and fears with the Monegasque princess (and there was already enough of that, as Diana found out about Charles’ love for Camilla even before the wedding and even thought about giving up on the wedding, but everyone l convinced it was too late). After listening to Diana, Kelly gently patted her cheeks and said:

“Don’t worry, it will only get worse.”

Charity

As if to fill that void, Grace and Diana devoted themselves to charity. The former became patron of the Monegasque Red Cross and the Rainbow Children’s Coalition, while the latter was well known for her work in the British Red Cross campaign against the use of anti-personnel mines and for her support for people affected by HIV and AIDS.

Fatal accidents

Both died in a car accident – and both accidents were shrouded in many rumors and secrets.

On September 13, 1982, Kelly was in a car accident. The cause of the accident, according to doctors, could be a sudden stroke which occurred while the princess was driving. Her daughter Stefania was also in the car and suffered a micro-fracture of a vertebra, but she made a full recovery.

However, the incident was accompanied by a number of oddities. For example, the palace initially released a statement saying the princess was alive, and one of the eyewitnesses said Princess Stefania was actually driving at the time of the accident. Speculation about the exact circumstances of the accident continues to this day.

Ironically, Grace Kelly’s funeral was Diana’s first solo performance as part of the royal family pageant – her husband did not accompany her to the sad event. The photos of the lonely crying princess were like a grim harbinger of future tragedy.

On the morning of August 31, 1997, the whole world will be shaken by terrible news: Princess Diana crashes in Paris with her lover Dodi Al-Fayed while trying to escape the paparazzi chase. However, even then there will be rumors and suspicions – even more monstrous than in the case of the death of Grace Kelly.

Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, wrote in his book that Diana seemed to know she was in danger of dying in a car crash just months before the incident.

In 2003, Burrell said Diana wrote him a letter stating that she believed herself to be in danger and that her ex-husband was plotting an “accident”. According to Burrell, Diana’s note read:

“This particular stage of my life is the most dangerous. My husband is considering having a car accident, brake failure and severe head trauma to clear the way for him.

According to Diana, Charles needed her dead so he could marry Camilla Parker-Bowles.
