Secret Letter: What Princess Diana Really Thought About Her Divorce From Prince Charles

Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced on August 28, 1996. That same evening, she wrote a letter to her butler, in which she revealed her feelings for her ex-husband.

The frankness with a representative of the royal servants was not something unexpected. Paul Burrell was the princess’s butler for 10 years, from 1987 until his death in 1997, during which time he became her true confidant.

That day, Burrell received a note from the princess, written on an A4 sheet and addressed to her. In the letter, Diana shared her innermost thoughts.

“August 28, 1996 is today the end of a 15-year marriage. I didn’t want this divorce and I always dreamed of a happy marriage with Charles. Although it was not meant to happen, we have two wonderful boys who are very much loved by their parents. A part of me will always love Charles, but I wish he cared about me and took pride in my work.”

“Those fifteen years were a time when Charles’s friends and relatives made me feel their envy, their jealousy and their hatred – they completely misunderstood me, and it was a painful experience that scarred my heart . I so want to be Charles’s best friend, I understand better than anyone what he wants and what he thinks.

Burrell was surprised that even after all the disappointment and pain, the princess didn’t forget her great love. He shared Diana’s message years later in his book. But Diana’s dreams of friendship with Charles were not destined to come true. Almost exactly a year after the divorce, she will die in a car accident.
