Talent agency Tavistock Wood has ended its partnership with British comedian Russell Brand following allegations of rape and sexual abuse published by the Times of London and the Sunday Times this Saturday (16/9). The artist, who vehemently denies the allegations, faces complaints from four women, one of whom was 16 at the time of the alleged rape.
The allegations against Brand emerged in the context of a journalistic investigation conducted by British newspapers and broadcaster Channel 4. According to the report, Tavistock Wood, which also represents artists such as Lily James and Dominic West, had already been informed of the allegations against Brand in 2020, but ignored it.
The charges were ignored
The minor, identified in the reports with the pseudonym Alice, said she contacted Angharad Wood, co-founder of Tavistock Wood, in 2020, to report Brand. Expecting an apology that was never made, she received an “aggressive” message in response from a lawyer representing Brand.
Now that the accusation has exploded in the media, the tone has changed.
In a statement, Tavistock Wood said: “Russell Brand categorically and vehemently denied the allegations made in 2020, but we now believe we have been horribly misled by him. TW has severed all professional ties with Brand.”
Alice reported that Brand called her a “baby” and even sent a car to school to take her home, where he forced oral sex against her will. She was one of four women who accused Brand of sexual assaults between 2006 and 2013, during which time he worked as a presenter on BBC Radio 2, Channel 4 and became an actor in Hollywood.
From Hollywood to the right
Between 2008 and 2012, the British comedian was very successful in films such as “The Hangover”, “Arthur, the Irresistible Millionaire” and “Rock of Ages: The Movie”, and even married the American singer Katy Perry. The marriage lasted just 14 months.
Today, however, he has become something of a right-wing Internet guru, promoting yoga, meditation, conspiracy theories and attacks on the press.
Defense of the Russell brand
Contacted by the media on Friday (9/15) to comment on the allegations, Brand took the initiative and posted a video on Instagram, announcing that “very serious criminal charges” would be forthcoming, which he completely denied.
“The relationships I’ve had have always been absolutely consensual,” Brand said. “I’ve always been transparent about it, almost overly transparent.
