Endangered blind rhino rescued by ‘American Pie’ actress in South Africa

A black rhino got a new chance after his path crossed with actress Shannon Elizabeth, known for her role in the box office hit film American pie. Munu, the affectionate nickname given to the giant, was found wandering aimlessly in the savannas of South Africa. It didn’t take long for experts to discover that the animal, whose species is critically endangered, was blind.

The defenseless rhino was already surrounded by lions when vets at the Addo Elephant National Park in eastern South Africa came to his rescue. Once experts discovered Munu’s blindness, he was rescued and taken to an enclosure in the park, but his future was still uncertain.

Teams considered euthanizing the animal, as returning it to the wild could mean death at the hands of predators. It was then that conservationist Brett Barlow decided to take action and find a permanent home for the rhino who, despite being blind, is healthy in all other respects.

In addition to health, Munu is considered rare, as only 254 rhinos of his species exist in the wild. Most were killed by hunters looking for antlers. This is where the actress, responsible for playing the character of Nadia in the 1999 hit film and who now runs a wildlife welfare foundation in South Africa, came into play.

With Shannon’s help, Barlow was able to send Munu to a sanctuary, where he now lives safely. The expectation is that he will breed and help increase the black rhino population. On social media, Shannon often posts photos and videos of the rhino, as well as calling attention to the animal’s cause and risks of extinction. “We are so lucky to be able to spend time with Munu and draw inspiration from him, doing everything we can to protect and love rhinos,” the actress wrote in an Instagram post.
